Gust's Painting (mini quest)

I couldn't figure this one out before my time ran out. Was it because I did it late in the day, or because the bucket disappeared when I tried the closest water (and fell in as usual). Maybe it's bugged, I'm not sure. Has anyone else succeeded at this?

i tried the water right in front of the painting, fell in, then started to run toward the well but turned back and saw a ... interactive in the water a few meters upriver, or to the left of the easel if if you're looking at the painting.

this is one of those problems with this game. If you don't look it up. You won't know. I thought I needed to craft a bucket. Good thing I looked it up. There's no way I would of thought I somehow had a magical bucket.
