I guess I should elaborate, the pickaxe and axe use much more stamina depending on skills.
Axes and pickaxes are so slow, that the sword will easily surpass them in damage. Some monsters attack quickly enough to even prevent you from using your tools to swing at them.
Also, if you are lucky, one hit might interrupt the enemies attack animation, enabling you to place some more hits without fearing retaliation.
In the time you swing your axe once you will swing your sword 3-4 times. With each time to crit and the 3rd and 4th attack deal way more dmg then the first two.
The atk on the sword is just a +atk to your base, so is the ones on the tools - that way you get way more powerful in the end. With the last sword currently available i can crit for up to 600 dmg.
So, sword is the way to go ^.~
The sword does in fact more damage per hit than the pickaxe or axe.
I don`t think its intended as a weapon.
