locked slots in storage boxes
i was wondering what's needed to unlock those. the extra slots in your character's inventory can be bought but can't seem to find how to unlock these.

There is also a 60-slot box that can be unlocked later, called a safety box. This is unlocked by donating 30 items to the Portia Museum (once you eventually help in its construction) and claiming the crafting plans from the rewards box inside the structure.

You can't "expand" an existing storage box. As you progress other types of storage boxes with larger capacities will become available to build.

Technically, you can, since you can upgrade old boxes by holding the newer, bigger ones, and walking over to the smaller ones. I don't remember which key it is, but you'll be given an option to upgrade the box.

There is also the Helper Storage Box which has 60 slots like the Safety Box, it's unlocked with the level 3 workbench and is easier to craft than the Safety Box. Though upgrading to a level 3 worktable is expensive in of itself.

Yes, you've got the wood storage box, which is easy enough to make ~~ then you can upgrade to the metal box. I have not needed to upgrade to a safety box. I already had the factory; So, the need for boxes was slim.
