What's the best way to play this game?
Are we supposed to pause all the time, and micro-manage our squadmates? Alternatively, should I just play on Easy, and forget the micro-management thing?

In your opinion, what's the best way to play this?

I recommend you manage them. The most fun is when you combo attacks with your NPC squadmates. You can always leave them to it at anytime, they will still engage the enemy by themselves.

Hi,

Thank you for this. Yes, this is EXACTLY the way to play. If you don't pause... I mean almost continuously... and move your men about... the game just doesn't function properly.

This really is kind of a strategy game.

And, honestly, this game is under-rated. I'm kind of surprised at how good this game actually is.

You need to pause to activate skills.

I don't believe your men will ever activate their skills, mines, turrets, shields etc. so you should be pausing to order your guys to use their skills yes. but it should be brief.

Well... good thing I didn't pay anything for it... pausing to play is a terrible way to try and "experiance" a game... There is such a thing as real time strategy... Even turn based is a far better strategy method to the point it makes pausing games feel completely crappy...

Knights of the Old Republic and the original Mass Effect worked the same way in controlling and ordering squadmates and they are unanimously considered great games.

Knights of the old republic is a great example of how to do pausing for combat right. I had completely forgotten about that one. I have been completely turned off of the feature by Baldurs Gate: Enhanced Edition due to how random the pauses are and how much it completely destroys the gameplay. This game might be worth playing if they institued it right. Thank you for the reminder that not all games have terrible pausing functionality for combat like Baldur Gate did.

Dropping the difficulty down to easy would make the game playable without pausing.

You don't actually pause the game in the Bureau, it goes into slow motion. If you bring up the tactical wheel it doesn't stop a character from being hit albeit at a slower rate, enough to decide on what NPC or character skills are available to be used or combo'd.

That's the whole point of a tactical 3rd person shooter and what it's aimed to be. RTS or turn based are entirely different types of games from this.

Thanks for the information. I will give it a go. :D

Learn the keys and your pausing won't last even a second, unless you want to move everyone individually instead of hitting F1.

Okay, I've been patient, but no more... this concern has been resolved twice over now. If you cared to read the entire situation you would know this and not continue to post stuff on it... Please aquite knowledge about the topic before opening your mouth...

Playing on veteran, I found that unless I specifically tell the AI to move to cover every minute or so, they will just stand in the open complaining that I didn't give them orders and then die.

Okay, my deepest apologies for suggesting something to make your game experience better. I didn't know your feelings were so sensitive, princess.

I made this mistake, too. I figured I played enough rooty tooty mcshooty games I could blow through this. But I'll be damned if your squadmates don't die or lose most of their hp in the first couple seconds of a firefight because they hate taking cover.

and the thought of going through another hour long tutorial so I can reduce the difficutly so my idiot teammates dont instantly die at the start of a fight is not exactly appealing
