Eternity was a terrible attempt at a "remaster" (it got delisted so that should be a hint) and Awakened tried to be a remake with "fresh gameplay" but felt unfinished and had so much less content than this one that people didn't bother.
Now after a community team kept DD1 afloat with community patches and Redux I guess the came back to squeeze more money out of it.
I totally forgot about Going Rogue which was another attempt at a DD1 remake, it is kind of sad.
---
essentially, they made DD1 so well that there is a pretty good sized group of people that still play this. while their attempts at remastering (Eternity and Going Rogue) were very lackluster and were quickly dismissed, they made DD2 and DDA. DD2 is much closer to an MMORPG than the "dungeon crawler" (kinda) we know today. While it is (in my opinion) much closer to accurately "remastering/a sequel" than others want to admit, the MMORPG vibe turns people away (I loved it, and there arguably a larger/active community for DD2 than DD1). As for the most recent, Awakened, I personally loved the game. It remastered it exactly how I would've liked, as well as put a very fresh "modern" spin on it while also adding a great amount of new content that still brought up the nostalgia. It did not get nearly popular enough as I think it should have, and very quickly died down since the community was very toxic at the time, and hard to find people to play with.
Overall, I would genuinely recommend playing DD2 as well as DDA if you are looking for a fresh "grind" and relive the nostalgia but with updated graphics/mechanics, but DD1 is definitely more than enough if you want to stay with what you know, and continue to grind on it.
one a week would be preferable
