I have heard someone claim they can get 3 combs per hive but I have not tried it.
I got 3 combs once yesterday, it worked
I have 4 lots of those set up in a room (so 16 combs per harvest) with two scarecrows outside. so far I have only lost a couple of flowers.
It's already yielded a chest of honey, and about 80 good healing salves so more than happy to sacrifice efficiency for an easier life ;)
Balboa has 5 honey areas although only 3 of them are big and are home to 2 bee swarms each for a total of 6 swarms for balboa.
For balboa honey areas see this guide.

Based on everything written in this thread and Hysline's(the author of the guide) experiments it can be concluded that:
1 planter = 1 honeycomb. 2 planters = 2 honeycomb. 4 planters = 3 honeycomb.
* for now, hanged planters don't count
A rather interesting and time/area saving solution is to do beehives and planters in a chess pattern, that way every beehive has 4 planters around it and will produce the maximum of 3 honeycombs per 8 minute cycle.
I have also got more than 4 swarms on the bear islands (not Balboa)
