I just have mine in a row. Row of beehives with a row of small planters with flowers in front of them and they work fine.
It actually does. There is a link to its wiki in the starting menu.
The wiki says that your flowers must be directly adjacent to the hive.
Having the wiki explain the whole game can be kind of a spoiler, so just use it to look up where you get stuck in the game.
If you take the time to read everything on the wiki before you play, it kind of spoils the fun IMO.
