smaller chars less damage with weapons?
hey,

i played d&d a while ago and neverwinter nights, so i know the rules a bit.
what i really dont understand:
if i equip a halfling with a heavy crossbow he does only 1d8 damage instead of 1d10. i was suprised i can equip linzi with this weapon at all.
why does it downscale the damage? its the same crossbow and bolt.
are all weapons in pathfinder magic and gets smaller if you have tiny hands?

thx for answers

Thanks Shar, I think you all have covered it - very timely and thank you all for the help, not quite DND but not quite not DND - one reason to love this game :)

one could also ask, why every race fits in the same armor... ;)
but hey, video game logic, invisible walls everywhere^^

The weights thing bugs me as well...everything should scale down or up.

You should be glad they simplified it so that all the equipment can be treated as either small or medium depending on the wearer/wielder, otherwise the gearing options in this game would be even worse than they already are; the vendors offer pretty much nothing good, you can't order custom gear, you can't travel to a big city to get anything good, you can't upgrade any gear, you can't craft anything yourself, and most of the stuff that drops is already useless garbage.

In pnp medium weapons like a long sword are considered two handed weapon on a small character. It's not that you can't use the weapons a medium character uses you just use them in a different way except for weapons that are 2 sizes over which are penalized. A halfling can use a greatsword but you take a penalty to attack. Similar to a human barbarian can use a giant's hand and a half sword, but at a penalty to attack.

A small creature can use a medium 1h weapon as a 2h weapon, but takes a penalty because it's not properly fitted for someone their size. A small creature cannot, however, wield a medium 2h weapon, or a large 1h weapon. There's no penalty, they just can't wield it, at least RAW; the only way around that is with houserules.

Yeah woops. I was wrong about the size of the individual weapon. They can't use huge weapon, but they can use medium as 2h and large at a penalty. Finesse only applies to tiny weapons. What you said wasn't inherently wrong you just missed where my mistake realy was.

Same reason that Halflings can wear Full Plate (non magic), take it off, and have an Orc fit into it 10 seconds later.

How hard is it to get that they didn't want to clutter the inventory system up by also adding 2x the amount of existing weapons by having them at different sizes too?

Yes, they're honoring the size rules, but they're not also making you have to go and keep track of all the stuff.

It's years armor magicaly adjust to people of different size without anypeople complaining about it. Ok, here that change the weapon dice, but that work in the other way, enlarging someone boost the dmg.

It's already a pain to find magical items that suit you, so imaging if all armors & weapons come with different sizes!
Neunmalklug Oct 5, 2018 @ 9:36am
but why change weapon dice? did you read it properly? why not simply say heavy crossbow isnt allowed to be used by halfings and done. the same with 2h sword and whatever big heavy weapon and done?

It's just how the rules work..
You might not notice, but small characters also gain +1 armor vs medium enemies..

They've just done us the favor of resizing "magically"..
God it would be a pain if you finally find your perfect +5 flaming longsword or whatever, only to realise that it's a size to small or large XD

They have however made an exception with Amari..
What she's using is a large bastard sword (as in a bastard sword if wielded by a large character).
If you have another character with a bastard sword and use enlarge person on that character you will get a sword with the same stats..

That is also why Amari gets a penalty on attack (and why she's better of with any other bastard sword)

They inflict less Strength damage, but they have higher Dexterity, because of their smaller bodies.

If you plan to cast the spell Reduce Person on your own party, it's a good idea to give them Weapon Finesse, so that they can use their Dex bonus for attack rolls.
IllusiveViper Oct 5, 2018 @ 9:42am
they also did somethign similar for how they treat large sized weapons: amiri's bastard sword and the Devourer Longbow
by PnP rules these weapons can't be equipped normally by medium characters (let alone small) but they just impart a penalty to hit

Because a longsword to a halfling is a shortsword to a human, a shortsword to a halfling is a dagger to a human, etc. Just like a greatsword to a giant is unusable for a human without hit and/or strength penalties. Ammo for a smaller crossbow is a smaller bolt, a smaller crossbow has less tension than a larger crosbow, same with a bow.

What the game doesn't show you is that the weapon scales down to the size of the wearer, so anything stuck on a small character is now a small weapon instead of medium.

There are all sorts of spells that can rank up or down the size or a character or a weapon. Enlarge person, hurricane bow, leaded blades.

At first yeah, after a few levels it is no different than having power attack on.
