Apparently, it's the well, located in your capital city. But I have yet to find a way to climb down it.

also what are the lights on the barrows second floor supposed to mean?

In act 4 i picked up the key, irc it pops up as a notice in events for kingdom management, and the next clue that says I need to kill 45 monsters that will be marked or something to that effect. Haven't been back to the barrow to see if its unlocked but based on the wording I expect I have to wander the world map and find 45 specific monster lairs.

Correct. Your key in the inventory shows the remaing ones you need to kill. By the time I got my key, I only had 15 left.
Locations were you find Monsters to kill for the key are supposed to be marked on the map in a specific way, couldn't see that though.

I just did it. You have to beat every place on the map, for completing the 45 kills. i skipped a early map and it took me 2 hours finding it...

Does this include "text" map locations?

No only maps which have mobs to kill. Main story and companion quest locations also dont count.

If you do this quest do it while travelling with someone with very high perception (like in the 30s), it's the fastest way to get zones to pop up in the minimap.

As for the key, it appears sometime in Chapter 4 as a Kingdom Event, if you're in auto-mode you can check the well in your capital and there should be a rando NPC complaining about the well inside the fence.

As for killing the 45 monsters, this is where the high perception comes in. You need to find almost every map node, especially the ones not tied to any quest. Fight the bosses of that node and on their death you'll notice blue wispy things converging on your character, that means that was one of the monsters. You'll need the entire map unlocked cause there are nodes in the Pitax area too.

There is ONE node which you need dimmension door to get to the boss in, Ilthuliak's Lair on the mountain range on the northwestern part of the map, but otherwise it's doable.

There's a huge payoff at the end cause the gear is amazing.

I used up the key charges and went to the barrow - 4 lamps are lit, forcefield still there.

I went to all the locations, and killed all the things, but I thought that you needed to just go through the game until it wants you to go to the province on the far west of the map (2nd last chapter). Spoiler After taking over Pitax, before heading out to take out Nyrissa.

Yea, don't "use" the key at all. There is a dialogue option when you have the key and get to the door. It has to naturally go to 0 charges.

YOU CAN BYPASS the locked blue portal with Lindsi , use her teleport spell . You have to stand to the left of the portal so you can see over the wall , it helps if you have a torch or light spell on someone , so it lights a part of the other room , then just stack everyone on Lindsi and teleport into the prison with the lich .
