You can buy diamond dust from the cleric - not Jhod, the Aasimar one - starting from Chapter 2 in your capital for I think 50g each? I think she has 1k of them for sale.

I also second Antoniius on Dragon's Breath. What more could you ask for, from a single level 4 spell? It's like a poor-man's fireball, cone of cold, acid spray, lightning bolt, and who knows what else all rolled into one spell - especially useful if you're building a control sorcerer, but also want pack some serious firepower.

I come from a long history of tabletop gaming where the spells are so much easier to use so for this it is way more difficult at least for me also 3-5 enemies with a fireball is not that good normally you try to hit all of them :)

Haste- haste is, like BG2, the most force multiplying spell in the game.

In fact, it kind of ruins things.

Magic missle, burning hands, glitterdust, haste, mirror image, any spell armors are good also displacment, lighning and fireball help alot.

No, it's ignoring friendlies (this why everyone so love it).

My first two spells for each spell level would be 2 different types of damage (fire, lightning, ice, acid). After that whatever defence, extra damage, or utility I think I'd need.

Generally speaking you get the fewest spells so you either need the best spells for a single task (usually blowing stuff up), or spells that are useful in the most situations possible.

it depends on what you plan to do. First level safest bet is color spray + magic missile. Can get evocation spell focus and spell specialization magic missile to fire 3 of them at level 1

Guys, Resist Energy, Communal: Fire, Fireball. Melee doesn't care about your fire damage then, because they have resistance that scales to your level (20 at 7, 30 at 11, IIRC).

0r just roll a wizard you will have to rest the same time as your cleric anyway

Fastello's advice is superb. I would add DON'T get anything that is HD-maxed. Example : puts to sleep up to 6 HD of opponents. These tend to become unuseful quickly.

I played as sage sorcerer. My play style was direct damage and illusions. Also used metamagic. I prefer control+damage as offensive and mobilty+miss chance as defensive.
So I would suggest (marked ones are my favorites and mostly used ones);

*Lvl1-Magic missile: Certain damage
Lvl1-Mage armor: Early AC boost, not bypassable
Lvl1-Color Spray: Easy victory if successful

Lvl2-Burning Arc: Good damage at early
Lvl2-Mirror Image: Selfsuffiency
*Lvl2-Blur: Good defensive

Lvl3-Resist Energy, Communal: Scales
Lvl3-See Invis, Communal: Never bad to see invisibles, long duration
Lvl3-Fireball: Effective on bulk enemies to avoid being overrun
*Lvl3-Haste: Multiple attacks to melees
*Lvl3-Displacement: Short but effective

*Lvl4-Dimension Door: Very useful in or outside of battle
Lvl4-Volcanic Storm: Damage + Slow, useful in many situations
Lvl4-Obsidian Flow: Same as above
Lvl4-Grater Invis: Same as displacement, also not lose invis when attack

*Lvl5-Cloudkill: I use it with sirroco combo
Lvl5-Fire Snake: Avoid friendly fire

Lvl6-True Seeing: there are a lot of enemies with illusion effects
Lvl6-Chain Ligthing: Good damage againts tanks
*Lvl6-Sirocco: Fortitute save to knock down enemies(like wildhunts), my favorite so far
Lvl6-Hellfire: Fire+Unholy, semi unresistable, serious damage

*Lvl7-Prismatic Spray: :D for fun
Lvl7-Firebrand: resist + damage buff

Lvl8-Shout-Greater: same as sirocco
Lvl8-Stormbolts: defensive when you get ambushed

Lvl9-Tsunami: Yes i like knocking people down
