Composite Blasts?

How do I use these? I've just recently gotten the tiefling girls to level 7, and I decided to give the fire one the power of earth as her expanded element (to unlock lava), and the water one the power of lightning (to unlock storm).

The last time I tried to combine Earth and Wind on one of my custom Kineticists, but getting both elements didn't unlock the Sandstorm element, which I thought that might have been the appropriate combo.

The reason I ask, is because I and several other players have probably noticed that the developers of this game ripped the explanations for abilities word for word off the official books and wikis. Which means that there is information within this game about features which aren't actually present within gameplay mechanics. So I have no idea if all of these composite blasts have been implemented, or if only certain types are available.

It doesn't really show up in the level up screen, but you do get it if you look at the area where you select what blast type to use. I was also confused about this for a while too. Just a poor UI issue nothing more.

You get composite blasts from combining a Physical Blast with an Energy Blast. If you have two physical simple blasts you won't get a composite blast. (Generally speaking, there are a couple exceptions).

I'm not sure. If I remember correctly, the character was a kinetic warrior (the ones who specialize on the sword). I don't know if Sandstorm sword is available in game.

Regardless, I figured out how to do it now. I'm a bit disappointed, since it costs 2 points of burn to use composite blasts. Which means I can't just spam Magma and Storm, now.

Correct. Composite Blasts are your nova option for when you absolutely positively gotta do all the damage asap.
