How Trolls Could Achieve Immortality
Step 1 - Become a Cleric

Step 2 - Take both the Earth and Fire Domains

Step 3 - Reach level 20

At level 20, these domains grant you immunity to Acid and Fire damage. The only two damage sources that can fully kill a Troll!

Good thing there aren't too many Trollish PCs, ha.

There are many other way to kill it.
Bring his Constitution down to 0
Starvation, thirst, suffocation
Negative level drain
Death effects
Disintegrate spell (secondary effect that kills the person turning it to ash)
Teleport him inside a wall

Anything that kills without doing hit point damage.

Half of it wouldn't work though. Cleric, you know, probably has a Death Ward active.

Could also restore ability damage, like the constitution and level drain.

And if they're using buff spells such as Bear's Endurance, you'd have to put in even more effort to reduce it to 0!

(Or just DD him somewhere where he's harmless, like inside a mountain or something ; yes, this is a more liberal use of DD, sue me - that's how Krune used it, so why not?)

I found a D&D story on youtube, where the party uses a gate spell to drop a Tarrasque on top of Asmodeus.

The legions of Hell considered this to be a declaration of war, and tried to invade the mortal plane a year later. :D

In TT you can just trap the soul or magic jar. Once the soul is removed the body loses class based abilities. If the soul is released or the gem destroyed and there is no body, dead troll.

Dispel solves this. There are still many ways to kill it. It just requires a little more effort.

You just described the Misbegotten Troll in HatEoT. Alas, most parties still find a way to kill it.

Is THAT why he's so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ powerful?

I can proudly say that I've managed to defeat him, myself. At least once or twice. :-)

Yep, he (it) has 20 cleric levels with fire and earth domains. Pretty smart, for a troll.

I mean, there's a counter to every defense and a counter to every counter in tabletop. If the troll is a level 20 cleric, I see no reason he wouldn't also grab lichdom, which would make him *genuinely* hard to kill. Without it... no, it's really easy to kill him. Unbypassable regeneration is a joke to deal with. Especially since it's not even unbypassable. There's several ways of bypassing fire immunity.
There's also tons more defenses he can use to make it harder. Hell, RAW if you just dominate him/make him drink a bunch of protection from (current alignment) potions and his alignment changes, he loses all cleric abilities including his immunities. Super roundabout and pointless, but yeah.

The best way to become 'unkillable' is not through regeneration. It's just the basic lichdom because it's so absolute. You either break the phylactery or the lich comes back, there's no other way gimmick or loophole around it. Even a ghost's rejuvenation can be beaten by certain effects without the whole unfinished business.

Old age.
Once he is knocked out, suffocation would be easy enough. Just keep him at low enough negative damage that he can't wake up.

Still hard to deal with, but it's a level 20 character of a powerful race. Of course it is.

Suffocation.

All regenerating monsters that breathe can be killed by suffocation.

Dammit: Charon beat me to it :)

Baba Yaga laughs at that immortality. But to be fair she even laughs at deities.
