Is Necromancy worth it ?
Ever since this game went into beta i have wanted to play necromancer, when the game first came out i reached lvl 16 with a cleric necromancer but it didnt feel all that "usefull", i could debuff and stuff but the summoning felt very underwhelming.

Has anything changed since then or is it still more of a debuff class instead of a summoning class ?

i think the summon monster line of spells is more powerful if you want to summon stuff mostly. The summoned skeletons are quite good on lower levels, but the later undead summon spell is not that great imo.

A herald caller cleric can be both a good general summoner and still call undead to his help. Necro spells are mostly debuffs & damage otherwise.

May just give up on necromancy then unless they ever rework it to be more like the PnP or add an undead race and go tiefling summoner instead.

Thanks for replying.

Seriously? The same character can have multiple summons at the same time? I just assumed that wouldn't be allowed.

It isn't, they fixed it while back. Must be some exploit people are using.

i just started a new run and a certain slaver kept summoning wolf after wolf so either not fixed or not fixed for NPCs

Only the monster tactician is limited to one summon, all other classes can cast summons as often as they have spell slots. Thats not a bug, just the normal rules, the monster tactician is an exception (gets other buffs, esp. long duration of the summon). Since a single cast of summon undead will add up to 6 skellies and every cleric (and potentially wizard/sorc) can use the spell, you can summon a huge amount ot them (not that this would be especially powerful since they have no ranged attack, and only last 1round/lvl - but it makes nice undead army screenshots^^).

Necromancy works great.

Getting any Necromancy related Feats feels pretty useless (the spells that rely on DCs feel severely underwhelming when compared to conjuration/transmutation/illusion/enchantment spells). Animate Dead is a great spell, but you don't need any Necromancy related Feats to cast it.

It's not so nobrain as others schools but you can play it. Probably use drain with maximised wands, boneshake/boneshatter low fortitude enemies (again, never forget your wands) and use reach weapons on your dudes with combat reflexes to aoo things you Fear. Then you get big skellington army which is awesome because they are cheap bodies that tank for you and are immune to everything, and endgame it's horrid wilting time. Probably good enough for anything up to Challenging difficulty or even Hard, depending on party.

It's up to you to decide, I like the changes to the Undead bloodline Sorccerer, a full caster with Dr 10/magic at lvl 9 is no laughing matter.

Spell Penetration > Greater Spell Penetration is the way to go with a true necromancer, since you can Enervate bosses down pretty effectively. You can push the DC pretty high, but I played on Unfair + Much Tougher Enemies so mostly ignored things that relied on DC unless they guaranteed some amount of damage regardless (Boneshaker, Finger, Etc). That said, there is some merit to Spell Focus just to get Spell Specialization for longer Animate Dead duration.

If you just want to use Animate Dead as a tarpit, then just Extend Metamagic (or Heighten for more flexibility) is perfectly fine.

You can probably push DC even higher now with Profane bonuses to INT from DLCs, if you play INT caster, and get a neat staff early, have to be Evil though.
