Wizards and Familiars: Different from Animal Companions

FOOLISH MORTALS; once again, Spidey1958 has released a video showcasing one of the classes as they exist in the current beta. This time, they decided to cover the Wizard, and in it, we get to see a preview of the available Familiars you can have as part of your arcane bond during character creation.

Unlike the Animal Companions which (as far as I can tell) merely assist you in combat, your Familiar provides bonuses to your wizard. Every familiar provides +2 Perception, as well as a bonus in an additional stat or skill.

As you can see in the video linked above at 24:40, the Familiars you can pick from are as followers


Cat +3 Stealth

Centipede +2 Will

Chicken +3 Hit Points

Dog +3 Lore (Nature)

Duck +3 Knowledge (World)

Hare +4 Initiative

Jerboa +3 Athletics

Lizard +1 Natural Armor Class

Monkey +3 Mobility

Rabbit +2 Reflex

Rat +2 Fortitude

Tarantula +3 Athletics

Viper +3 Persuasion

I don't know. Spidey1958 is the one doing the beta, I just post information that I learn while watching. So far, these "class tips" videos only go through the character creation process, without showing how they work in game.

I watched Spidey1958's video. It ends at character creation so we never see. I have not see any other videos with a wizard + familiar yet (and I searched). I do hope familiars are more then a passive buff.

Bad news, bears: It seems that Rangers have a greatly reduced selection of animal companions than the Druids do. As in a total of 3 (Dog, Eagle, Wolf).

Yep, Rangers selection is supposed to be limited. Original rules[paizo.com] if you're interested.

Druids are more one with nature, and their animal does a lot of the heavy lifting. Rangers are more like hunters where their animals fight by their side, so they are limited to those aggressive hunting animals.

Honestly, if I ever make a basic Wizard, I'll probably give him a Chicken as a Familiar. Never seen something like that, before!
