Familiars are small pets, with limited combat ability.
No, these seem to be focused more on enhancing your wizard's performance in certain areas. The animal companions grow in size because they're meant to assist you in combat.
In addition to Druids and Rangers, some archetypes also gain access to an animal companion. As of the time of writing this, I know that the Mad Dog (Barbarian) gets one.
If you're a divine caster who takes the Animal Domain, you also gain the animal companion after reaching a certain level.
Unfortunately, these magnificent creatures didn't make it.
There is, Spidey1958 did a Druid video. And the list is different from Familiars. It includes the following:
Bear
Boar
Dog
Elk
Giant Centipede
Leopard
Mastodon
Monitor Lizard
Smilodon
Wolf
No flight.
That's why there is no crow.
That would have been awesome! Maybe just maybe an expansion down the line?>
This did remind me of those Japanese Hornets:

I'm not sure. From the looks of it in the current beta, all they do is provide you a passive buff to certain skills / attributes.
