Regongar will actually shift to chaotic neutral if you keep trying to change him. Same for Octavia. They are not full good/evil, they are just at the border from neutral (which is a shame because there are already 3 chaotic neutral companions, more diversity would have been great, that game is missing a lawful evil companion).
Yeah, it's really silly. Poor writing. It isn't until the very, very end of the game that Octavia brings up some CE ♥♥♥♥ he's done in the past. But other than that he doesn't actually act CE for most of the game.
Why would you lose character with him? Forget his alignment. He's a fun guy that only wants to kill bad people and he listens when you tell him to cool down. I play LG and I saw no reason to get rid of him.
I did not banish him yet because he can be useful, but I guess you can just send him alone to face some owlbears and it's done. Octavia would not be mad at you because reckless reg tried to be a hero!
Spoken like a true evil
