In BG you had Detect Evil etc...what are you paladins doing? Maybe theres scrolls for it?

Guessing/Knowledge of the bestiary. Just type in the creatures name on the srd and see if it shows up as evil.

Sadly, there's no detect evil or know alignment spell in the game.

Edit, per PnP Paladins have it innately (but again not in game)

Detect Evil (Sp)
At will, a paladin can use detect evil, as the spell. A paladin can, as a move action, concentrate on a single item or individual within 60 feet and determine if it is evil, learning the strength of its aura as if having studied it for 3 rounds. While focusing on one individual or object, the paladin does not detect evil in any other object or individual within range.

smite everyone and than appologize if wrong. But i think its lame too, smites and protection from alighment are pretty big part of the combat, imploying it on random guess seems kinda wrong.

Some races are born evil.

I haven't tried playing paladin, but I remember reading someone saying that paladin should have a low lvl spell that can only be cast on evil.

So then it should be able to be used to see "can I cast this spell on this target? ok it let me do it then it is evil".

Sadly you can't.

So just cast Protection from Evil all the time just to be sure.

If you have +2 rings of protection and +2 cloaks of resistance, Protection from [alignment] does nothing for you.

That's if you have everything equipped. You get spell a lot earlier.

Also, high level version (Holy Aura/Shield of Law/Unholy Aura) also gives you spell resistance, immunity to mind affecting spells & blind.

Sadly again, the way protection from evil is implemented is only the basic stuff. It's missing quite a bit.

Someone mentioned a paladin ability that can't aim a creature if it isn't evil and used it to know if he could smite it. Can't help you more, never play paladin
