At the end it's implied that the Infinite you see is just another of the Phantom Ruby's illusion.
Eggman takes him away from you after the third fight even though he was willing to keep going and it's implied he either kills him or locks him up and takes his copy of the ruby (Eggman uses the original one from Mania, Infinite uses a purer copy than the prototypes, like the fake chaos emerald in SA2). This is to prevent Infinite betraying him like many of the people or creatures Eggman has used in past games have done.
After the events of the game, it's never explained what actually happened to him. Is Infinite dead? Or still locked away in Eggman's now destroyed base?
The mod Sonic Forces Overclocked takes the latter interpretation.
Even Metal Sonic deserved better (at least Mania had a great fight against him)
At least there's a mod for it: https://youtu.be/xtd5VaiSy5I
Also what sequel? I'm pretty sure the game will barely connect it with Forces (like how Colors barely references Unleashed or how Generations doesn't really connect with Colors).
I was expecting an actual threat like Mephiles, but instead I got some weakling who found a magic rock and thought he was a god or something. Also the fact that Sonic and Deviantart OC managed to defeat him with ease without even needing Chaos Emeralds speaks for itself.
I think that Sega needs to make Robotnik as a great and actually threatening villain once again.
Forces tried this, but it failed miserably because writers are incompetent. They tried to make it sound as bad as possible, like Sonic being tortured, which is complete and utter bullscheisse because Sonic didn't have a scratch on him.
He also felt like a genuine threat in Sonic Heroes, and he wasn't even the main villain in that game, Metal Sonic was, or even in Adventure 2 where Eggman blows up half of the moon in one scene. There's also this:
