I don't even want to praise Sonic Boom: Rise Of Lyric as its a terrible game, but you gotta admit that the characters at least have more of a use than recent years.
If the series got a complete reboot similar to the movie where everything was back to square one, I could at least accept that as long as they continue to build from there, but Forces and all these other recent games are still part of the same canon as all the other mainline games, 06 included as that was part of Generations as well.
Honestly, if there's a Sonic Adventure remake coming out soon, I hope that's what happens. We reboot the series, lay out what's canon and is not canon and hopefully move forward with the series. Hopefully we get a better decade in the 2020's than in the 2010's.
At least Sonic Boom, both the TV show and the games, were their own thing and not canon to the main series so starting fresh and/or feeling nothing like the characters they used to be makes more sense there, and even then Rise of Lyric at least felt like it treated the characters with a bit more respect than people give it credit for.
Anyway, as much as I like to praise Unleashed for its story... yeah Tails sucked in it. He was afraid of common baddies, and they did nothing but walk super slowly towards him. He does help later on, but he is hopeless on his own. One could say that he's afraid of enemies he never faced against in the past, but Chaos 0? HE'S AFRAID OF CHAOS ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ 0!?
Good thing I never played Sonic Boom. But yeah, Tails should go back to his DC, Heroes, Shadow and 2006 self since he actually did stuff in those games. Shooting the crap out of everything in SA2 never gets old, even when Shadow did it better, and despite having a stupid attack in New Sonic, it was still fun to rain hell on enemies from above using his fake ring bombs while flying in such a way to take shortcuts. Hell, he even gathers rings for you in Circus Park when doing his mission, despite being a tag along in Shadow the Hedgehog.
He's a side-kick, that was his main purpose in the serie since the beginning
Which is why I thought it was nice to finally see Tails and Knuckles playable again in Mania after nearly a decade of just being limited to the story or spinoffs. Shame the 3D series isn't getting the same love and care at the moment, especially what happened after 2006, where despite everything that went wrong behind the scenes, you can at least tell they actually cared and tried to make the best game they could.
Unless you play as Tails by himself in Sonic 2, 3&K and Mania where he felt like an alternate Sonic with flight instead of just a sidekick. Since Adventure 1, he's learned to depend on himself and be just as heroic as Sonic himself when necessary.
The series' title is Sonic because he's the protag, Tails and Knuckles are just secondary/supporting characters.
That doesn't mean that they can be completely useless and do absolutely nothing or barely anything at all. Heroes is proof of that - Tails and Knuckles is just as useful as Sonic in that game as each member of the team has unique abilities that the others don't.
Spoilers for the Sonic movie below:
One of the things I look forward to in the Sonic The Hedgehog Movie Sequel is the interaction I hope we get to see between Sonic, Tails, & Knuckles. It'll be awesome to see them as actual characters again and maybe see what conflicts they have with each other or in their lives.
Adventure 1 though is my favorite portayal of Tails though and if a Sonic Adventure Remake ever rears its head, I hope we get to see the same portrayal, just not aged from 20+ years ago.
And if it was not canon, he wouldn't have the same character development that he had in the fist game, where Tails learned to believe in himself. He would just be a coward and let Eggman win at a certain point in the story.
This uselessness of Tails is pretty much new to me, at least in the game canon.
It feels as if they truly wanted to make Sonic Forces into a Sonic (Saturday AM) cartoon adaptation and they could not do that without making Tails as ineffectual as he was there for similar reasons, that being, to let the new characters created for the adaptation shine in his stead.
