When was the homing attack removed?
Hey guys, I'm just curious here... of the "modern Sonic" games, I've only played Adventure 1 and 2, Heroes, Generations, and now Forces. This is the first "modern" game that I'm aware of where the ability to do the homing attack at any time was removed... instead replaced with this very weird double jump thing that isn't entirely useful. Of course, you can still do the homing attack against enemies, but navigating the puzzle areas without the ability felt ridiculously clunky and off to me.

I didn't catch Colors or Lost World (they just don't look like the games for me, and I don't think Colors is even on Steam/PC...) and was just wondering if these two had that ability in there, or if it was unique to this game. Thanks for any info!

Yes, those two games had a similar thing.

What a crappy design choice... hope it won't be permanent

Generations has a homing attack like you describe, but unlike the Adventure games, Shadow and New Sonic (2006), it's far too short. Still better than the odd double jump though; should have been a different button instead of the homing attack controls.

I really tried to go into this game with an open mind, but there's too many questionable design choices... I think the best bet for Sega will be to remaster Sonic Adventure 1 like they've been talking about, hopefully keeping it mostly in tact, and realizing that style of game is what players want!

Sonic and the Secret Rings is where the lock-on homing attack bit started. You can still do something similar if you hit the boost button in the air (just tap it) but its not as good.

Isn't it called the "Jump Dash"?

Are you sure the game will be good? What about having another Mania game?

The homing attack is still here, you just need to be next to an enemy first. They did this is Colors as well.

Colors had some wierd physics in 2D... the double jump doesn't works well

Pretty much. Never liked Colors. Story is flat out bad for characterization, mostly 2D (average 2D). Forces is a bit better, more to do, wisps shouldnt have returned but at least they work (unlike Lost World), and a slight return to the old characterizations (except Tails). An Adventure Remake collection would do wonders..

Hopefully such a collection includes both games, Uncensored/Uncut Shadow the Hedgehog and an official Steam port of the debugged fan remake of Sonic 2006. (currently Sonic P-06), plus Heroes. I doubt they'd include all of those but that would make my day. They could even include a PC port of World Adventure (360 version) but fix the horrible sun & moon coin hunting that has prevented me even opening Rooftop Run daytime, let alone reaching Eggmanland.

Windii translations for all, too, both voice acted and subtitles with the option to switch to the original dubs if you wish, like a hypothetical PC version of Dracula X2: Symphony of the Night. (that would be PS1 and PSP dubs) Speaking of voices, I hope they'd go back to using the Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic 2006 cast, especially Jason for Sonic and Shadow. Roger's Sonic voice sucks. If they can't get Jason they could always have Junichi Kanemaru pull double duty as his English actor too, given he's fluent in the language (being an English teacher on the side).

Objectively the best Boost game is Project Unleashed...

Kinda ironic how fans are the one who made the best Sonic game (Mania for the Classic, Generation's mods for Modern)

That doesn’t really count when Project Unleashed is taking levels already made by SEGA ;)

In another way, Unleashed probably has the best boost levels in the serie (the game suffered from the slower werehog sections)

Would it cost too much to Sega to simply stop shoving gimmicks into their game? I mean Forces had probably the worst Classic levels in the serie and the Avatar section could have been better made but if they 100% focused on boost they could've made a better game...

Classic Sonic in Forces is the result of Sega misunderstanding why people liked Generations. I still think Generations has better levels than Unleashed though

Yeah, Generation's main flaw is that the game is short and that almost half of the levels are city-themed
