The game autosaves all the time, whenever you do a task that's kind of important, sometimes when you go from one location to another and every time you quit to the main menu. You won't lose a day's progress, that isn't going to happen.

I actually wanted to get the Hobocop type which requires sleeping in the trash container, I was far past that point when I realised I missed the opportunity.
