Am I the only one who hated Disco Elysium?

I bought DE a couple of weeks ago and put about 12 hours into it. I thought it was crap, and I like to think I appreciate good writing and the cop genre. After all, I am a former defense attorney and avid reader - including noir detective stuff. Anyhow, I disliked everything about this game, and won't even try with a new game/character make.

I personally booted the game for the first time years ago and immediately fell in love with the whole concept of being completely drunk to the point you forget who you are. I love this game, it literally changed my life and helped me empathize with myself and others better.

I have some games too that mix a lot of things I love, but the game doesn't get me.

played all the way through it, went from liking it at the start to hating it at the end. trash game, the fans really do not know what a good rpg is meant to be, nor a good detective story. it just misses all the marks it set out to do, but yeah the music and art is nice. that is not even close enough to save this crapfest. and that BEFORE i get into the heavy handed messaging and nonsense in the story

I love the game, though the ending isn't great so it's really the journey that matters here. Its style of gameplay certainly isn't going to be for everyone, however, which is why I always recommend people do the ole "2-hour Steam trial" before committing to it.

I have been an avid reader all my life, and a fan of police procedurals, so a very similar set of tastes as yourself and I enjoyed it a great deal ... except for the ending.

But then again, if you try so hard to present yourself as an authority on these things, being an "avid reader" and a "former defense attorney", then in the end the extent of your criticism boils down to nothing else than "I thought this game suuuucked.", does it even matter? You're telling me that being a former defense attorney AND an avid reader you can't articulate your opinion better than that? I can see why you're a "Former defense attorney", that's all I'm gonna say.

I've tried to get into this game but lacking direction is really dragging on me. I've played for 7 hours and done basically nothing but get stuck in a room I couldn't exit (so I had to reload).

Whats the genre of this game? Ive never felt particular pull towards buying this game, but now, 1 hour left on steam spring sale, Im considering it. It doesnt seem to have anything setting-wise that would interest me. I wish I knew more what this game is about, but people speaking in its favor are just as bad as the OT. "This game is so good". But why?
