the writing in this game is incredible
I resisted playing this game for years, because I thought the writing was going to suck, for some reason.

but it's some of the best writing in any game, ever.

it's so sad the dev. studio was taken over by estonian criminals who fired all the leads.... lol.

im sure za/um will never make another game and the estonian crooks will just live off the royalties from this game.

its sad.

its crap. 50% of it is just waxing philosophic nonsense and thinly veiled real world references

A guy with 850 hours in fallout 4 would think that.

the prose is legit some high level ♥♥♥♥, i wish i could describe stuff with this level of complexity in my D&D games because i have never felt so attuned to a silent character as i have when i succeeded that hand-eye coordination check to throw a "boule"

They could have used an editor to cut out a lot of waffle, it's quaint the first time but overly self-indulgent. I deactivate the narrator voice to skip most of it these days, it's too much.

but then how would people claim that it is "deep"?

i would guess that most gamers dont know good writing, but that is probably true of most people these days. (seeing how Harry Potter outsells everything)

I guess ill start the game finally and tell you if its really good...

I think people older than 25 get it better
I'm almost 40 and I so understand all the feels the dude feels lol

It really is mostly pretentious waffle. Which is a shame as it obscures some really interesting ideas about what it is to be human. Anyone with an interest in literature can see through the writing style, it gets tiresome very quickly.

I can even get the argument that some of the writing for Harry's skills is "pretentious waffle", but the writing for most of actual person-to-person dialogue is fantastic and very much not a "pretention waffle".

Also, the lore and worldbuilding is impressive.

for a VIDEO GAME.... it's very good. most games have absolute ass writing. for example rogue trader. tons of writing, all skippable, its all crap.

The only other game with writing that comes close to disco elysium in recent memory is pathologic 2. another game with great writing that gets called pretentious sometimes.

but its really just people with a lower taste hitting the ceiling of their reading ability maybe.

I was expecting DE
to be pretentious which is why I avoided it for a few years, but its very good.
but the voiced narration is a bit much... I turned that off.....

I agree with you there. Video games have come nowhere near reaching their potential for quality storytelling.
Also agree it's better without the narration.

I'd advise you to scrap the idea that people who think the writing is overblown aren't bright enough to understand it, they might be able to see something you haven't.

Thanks for the heads up on Rogue Trader btw
