I went with an average well rounded detective first. It gives you a lot of options from that point.

well rounded detective is, by far, the worst choice you can do in this game

I would suggest the thinker archetype for a first playthrough then the sensitive archetype for a second

the thinker is the archetype that most feels like a detective, opening lots of dialogue options connected to the resolution of the crime and also to understand the game's lore and world

the sensitive archetype opens dialogue options to survey your character past and present presenting a better undestanding of your human condition

Honestly, stacking savoir faire, perception and composure is what helps a lot in the early game. Also, never use your thought cabinet for political thoughts. Only thoughts worth getting are the thoughts that ONLY give positive bonuses like the 'detective cousteau' thought.

You miss out on a lot of content if you play super-optimally in this game. Any build can make it through, and a lot of dialogue and even missable sidequests can come out of failing checks or researching thoughts that end up not giving the greatest bonuses.

The best first playthrough is pretty much whatever character you make, based on the stats and skills that interest you. This game changes a lot based on what you do.

This is closer to what I did. I focused on Thinker-based skills at the start, but grew into the Sensitive and Motorics skills as the game went on.

On subsequent playthroughs I ignored Thinker and focused on Sensitive and Physical skills. It was a completely different game lol.

Bollocks. Political thoughts often have negligible or nonexistent downsides. In fact, almost ALL thoughts have negligible downsides with a few exceptions. The Precarious World is a balanced thought, for example. And Wasteland of Reality's downside is huge, but it can singlehandedly change the game if you internalize it.

dont make a super optimized build or a well rounded one for your first playthrough. pick one of the three archetypes and you'll be good

consider thinker + some extra points into enciclopedia: at least you will get some extra info regarding the world you are into

I think going into the extremes is more fun. Intelligence, psyche, physique, and motorics are all fun in their own way but emulating a normal cop isn't really the aim of the game. Go all in on being crazy or a meat head or a druggie or a superstar or a habitual liar... etc. you get the idea

I just started the game, and I gotta say, I do enjoy getting all these frequent Encyclopedia checks early on in the game, which probably does make for a nice first playthrough, as to get to know stuff in the game or their references. Which is the detective way (most left one at the start). If I went with muscle guy first, pretty sure I wouldn't be getting all this information, so that would go for another playthrough. Am I wrong here or what?

The most honest one. It's really nice to be empathic to your character and answer the things "possible in your real life".

Encyclopedia is worth picking to get more lore from the game/
Don't - make a character that you'd want to play. Finishing up playthrough four right now, and my builds are only getting dumber and I wish I started that way.

But how do you find it in you to be replaying this game this many times over? Like, even if you do miss a bunch of content in your first playthrough - that's understandable. My first run is detective, next one I'm gonna try to be a muscle-type. That's 2 runs. How do I make 4 out of this? There are only 3 builds and 1 custom one, I imagine content here is very repetitive, no? This game is not like Skyrim or smth
