I can't say anything about the sequel but look into that too, I guess.
In general I recommend point and click, "I find Loom", Discworld Noir, "I've not Mouth and I must scream" etc. Prepare yourself for pixel hunting and save scumming.
And what I consider very well written, games that are not necessary similar as a novel like Disco Elyisum, but the immersion is great: Deus Ex, Witcher 1, Gothic, Prey, Fallout, Vampire the Masquerade Bloodline etc
Another great game that I find interesting in its story and writting is Hades from Supergiant; and while is not about the writting itself is the best point (the roguelike aspect and the frenetic combat mechanics are trully the spice), it is the dialog that really sales the characters and their interactions, making it trully special.
Also Bastion from the same studio! It has a great development by the use of a narrator that not only tells the player's situations and actions, but also gives its unique perspective in the story. Really charming.
Anyways, these are the ones that I recommend for now.
I actually heard about "ive not a mouth and i must scream" on Pushing Up Roses on youtube. Looks really interesting.
Which one would you recommend these days?
While I agree FNV has good writing...is it THIS good? I'm not of that opinion to be honest.
I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream is different to the book, but has a good plot and soundtrack, however I don't think the gameplay is very good.
Planescape Torment (which has been mentioned) is good, but the combat is not very good (as is the usual for old RPGs). I consider DE to be the successor to PST. I also recommend Vampire Bloodlines for similar reasons.
Underrail is less focused on the story but has good, challenging gameplay (even though I feel like I'm poisoning myself when I play it). The story is still good though.
Return of the Obra Dinn is an indie game where you investigate a ship to figure out how it met its end. It is very well written for this and I highly recommend it.
