Other games with writing this good?
Doesn't have to be top down or iso, but I don't mind if it is, I also don't mind third or first person views. I would like to know what other games out there have a good story/writing. Thanks.

Sunless Sea comes to mind, easily. A very different kind of game though, focused on exploration and resource management with a hint of RPG. You will also spend quite a bit of time travelling across the sea not reading anything or doing much, so you have to be into that.

I can't say anything about the sequel but look into that too, I guess.
Planetscape torment for sure, as that's a very big inspiration for disco elysium afaik. In terms of other very well written games, it's VERY different, but I strongly recommend the nier series; despite its appearance it's one of the best written narratives I've experienced

Telltale's The Walking Dead series. I know it's not an RPG but it's absolutely brilliant and if you focused more on the story in games that series is a must.

If you are looking for something similar to this one, it's going to be difficult.

In general I recommend point and click, "I find Loom", Discworld Noir, "I've not Mouth and I must scream" etc. Prepare yourself for pixel hunting and save scumming.

And what I consider very well written, games that are not necessary similar as a novel like Disco Elyisum, but the immersion is great: Deus Ex, Witcher 1, Gothic, Prey, Fallout, Vampire the Masquerade Bloodline etc

Humble opinion: I think Disco Elysium takes the trophy the last decade since is not only beautifully written in a story, structural perspective, but also the writting itself is really undestandable yet poetic glance. I haven't see any game that has characters more fleshed out and complex as the protagonist and the support class. I havent play Planetscape Torment (yet), but I think this one takes the grade.

Another great game that I find interesting in its story and writting is Hades from Supergiant; and while is not about the writting itself is the best point (the roguelike aspect and the frenetic combat mechanics are trully the spice), it is the dialog that really sales the characters and their interactions, making it trully special.

Also Bastion from the same studio! It has a great development by the use of a narrator that not only tells the player's situations and actions, but also gives its unique perspective in the story. Really charming.

Anyways, these are the ones that I recommend for now.

It's not quite the same but Outer Wilds is an interesting game. Not quite as political and character driven as Disco Elysium but it is an interesting mystery solving game

The game is fantastic, the stories are really good. If you are planning to play it, I will advice to make several saves, be patient, and be aware, the ending can be a bit unforgiving, I remember watching the ending on youtube because of that. But it's still amazing.

@Serimoto I remember the LSL games back in the early 90s and were great fun.

Which one would you recommend these days?

While I agree FNV has good writing...is it THIS good? I'm not of that opinion to be honest.

Only Planescape: Torment is comparable in my opinion, of the games I've played.

VA11HallA is good, though it looks at different themes (focuses more on relationships) and is a linear visual novel.

I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream is different to the book, but has a good plot and soundtrack, however I don't think the gameplay is very good.

Planescape Torment (which has been mentioned) is good, but the combat is not very good (as is the usual for old RPGs). I consider DE to be the successor to PST. I also recommend Vampire Bloodlines for similar reasons.

Underrail is less focused on the story but has good, challenging gameplay (even though I feel like I'm poisoning myself when I play it). The story is still good though.

Return of the Obra Dinn is an indie game where you investigate a ship to figure out how it met its end. It is very well written for this and I highly recommend it.
