Thoughts can have useful upgrades but kind of hard to know if one is worth learning atm without reviewing wiki to see what they do. Combined with the fact that it costs a level up point to remove an internalized thought and unlearned thought is gone forever, pretty annoying, would have been better if game told you what learned skill did imo. Worth learning thoughts overall, but make sure to keep some points reserved for skill upgrades.
BUT. Do not disheartened if you failed the check. Failure in this game is fun.
That's just my personal broad guideline, though. Depending on your playstyle and how thoroughly you go through the quests, you might have a lot more SP to play with, and can be a lot more free with how you spend them. If so, you can also think about getting to 13-14+ with 1-2 skills. There's a little unique content for each skill that you only get to see if you're nearly maxed (the highest checks in the game being 18-20, iirc).
