Retrying white checks when skill is maxed out?

When playing, I failed a white check. Normally you can try it again when you increase the relevant skill, but my skill is already maxed out, so this isn't possible. Is there any other way of retrying the skill check? Using items to increase the skill doesn't allow that, and I haven't found a way to increase my stats so I could raise the skill cap either. It's probably not a game ending situation, but failing a 97% check and not being able to retry it annoys me to no end...

If you increase it with a thought, find a clue that gives it a bonus, or luck into buying the right die, that can open it, too. Also, when you say you used items, do you mean clothes or drugs/booze? If you up your skill using a drug, that does also temporarily increase the cap, so while the drug alone won't unlock it, it gives you one more point you can put in which will.

With items, I meant clothes, sunglasses, etc. So far I've been playing maybe too clean-nosed for this game and haven't been using any drugs so I haven't explored their mechanics at all.... If I understood correctly, when I have unused skill points, I could do it by taking a drug that raises the cap and then spending a skill point? Have to try that once I have a skill point to spare.

Exactly. You get to keep the point spent even when the cap goes back down. You don't have to change how you've been playing, though. There's unique dialogue for staying clean the whole game, and this is a game that's meant to be replayed. A lot can change.
