Pawning RCM fuel canister: solution, & way to get other items back

This took me a few minutes to do after pawning my fuel and realising I needed it for a task.

On your computer, go into AppData/LocalLow/ZAUM Studio/Disco Elysium/SaveGames/and find the zip file of your save game there. You may need to show hidden folders in order to find this.

Inside the zip, extract the file that ends with 2nd.ntwtf.json

Open Notepad, and open the 2nd.ntwtf.json file with it

Search for the "gainedItems" list and put "fuel_canister_rcm" inside. Then, find the "PAWNABLES" list, look through it and find the largest "Key" number. For example, if the largest number in there is 16, this means we'll be using 17.

Put this inside the "PAWNABLES" list:

Be sure that you follow proper JSON syntax, like putting commas between items in a list. Just follow the format that's already in the file. Save it, drag and drop the file back into the original zip.

Load the game and it'll be there. This will also work for other items: you just need the item code and to put it in the correct spot e.g for a clothing item you'd put it in the clothes section (not PAWNABLES) and in the GainedItems section.

But last time I pawned it I just couldn't be bothered to do something like this and live with the consequences.

Would be GREAT, if we can buy back things from pawnshop, I mean... that's how pawnshop should works right lol

I tried this, and the item appears in-game, but I can't use it and it doesn't allow me to interact with it either. Did I do something wrong?

I'm not sure! The above worked fine for me. Can you load an old save and try it again?

Thanks so much for this! I pawned it a while ago, assuming it wasn't for the task since it was pawnable (& I thought they wouldn't let you sell a quest item) and only now realised it was necessary for the task.

It's stupid how they let you sell quest items with no way of getting them back.

idk what people mean when they say that.
are they saying there's a third canister in the game?
because the second one i'm aware of is locked on "finale island".
