how do you make the game uncensored
it's really annoying and immersion breaking not being able to hear the curse words naturally

I'm pretty sure that's the only censored conversation in the game (Cuno and Cunoesse)

Well there's a censored Pissf*****t jacket but that's the only other exception lol

Yeah, it's only like that because the joke is that they're actually saying flaubert.

wait what?
so are you saying it was always supposed to be censored, & they were never really saying f*g**t?
Du-Vu Apr 5, 2021 @ 2:13pm
Yep. You're supposed to wonder what they're actually saying, since they don't censor anything else. It's Revacholian slang, apparently, for ♥♥♥♥♥♥. The Pissf****t jacket is listed in the game code as jacket_pissflaubert, and the one time it's uncensored (in the Final Cut, can't remember if it was in the original), it's Pissf****t saying Pissflaubert (sounds like flow-bear).

The real life Flaubert was a pretty hardcore lush who went through periods of abstinence and lived through the French Revolution and was disappointed by it -- pretty thematically relevant to the game. Could probably go deeper than that but I'm not the one to ask.

1. Extract the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ dialogues from the ♥♥♥♥
2. Use a ♥♥♥♥ editor to change all instances of "♥♥♥♥♥♥" to "♥♥♥♥♥♥" (or "♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥" or whatever the ♥♥♥♥ you like)
3. Put the changed ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ back in the game
4. There's no ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ step four, you ♥♥♥♥♥♥!

(and no, I have no idea how to accomplish step 3, maybe with the tool that can be used to inject translations into the game: https://github.com/Bandris86/DiscoTranslator )

P.S: I'm pretty sure "f♥♥♥♥t" is supposed to be the slur for a gay person, as Kim reacts very badly when Harry uses it, and your reputation with Kim is lowered.

I thought the self-censorship in that dialogue was a strange choice given the language and themes in the rest of the game. It's obviously an adult game so I thought it wasn't necessary.

I'm not saying that it doesn't still mean ♥♥♥♥♥♥, just that the word for it seems to be different in the setting.

Well, you know how the internet is now-a-days. Despite intent, any example discrimination towards a minority in a piece of media will be construed somewhere as promotion of the act, which will lead to controversy.

Heck, I swear there’s an click-baity article somewhere where they talk about the use of swear-words and the other heavy stuff in the game and the lead writer says something along the line of having to compete with social-media and all the other games there are so a bit of abrasion was needed for attention.

OTOH Pissf's jacket doesn't have enough room on the back to spell "flaubert", and when you look at it (equip it, then use the mouse to rotate Harry) it doesn't (granted, it's pretty much illegible).

So true. I don't understand how or why people get offended by derogatory or even offensive language in works of fiction. In no way does it condone or promote its use.
Denying that the words exist and are used is like sticking your head in the sand.
As a queer person myself I'd prefer that a word I've been called countless times is represented in fiction.

That and censorship doesn't work. Never has. If anything it gives the word *more* power.

we should be able to say what we want, whenever we want, & just let the market sort it all out

I think that's part of the joke, in this case. In a game that really doesn't censor much and is quite honest in general, if it used the word ♥♥♥♥♥♥ uncensored, it might largely pass unnoticed, fade into the background. But they don't want it to pass unnoticed, they *want* you to wonder. That's what the whole conversation with Cuno is about, him trying to get under your skin with a word that he understands as being shocking without really understanding or caring why. The game draws attention to that by censoring a word that has no reason to be censored other than because people give it power by continuing to be shocked by it. Or something, I'm not putting this well, but hopefully the gist is coming across.

It's kind of the opposite of how they deal with kipt or "Welcome to Revachol", but part of the same attempt to engage the player by making them think a little harder about a subject where they might take their current opinion for granted, to justify themselves again in-character.

Some people want to play a game without hearing slurs that they hear in real life applied to them.

So all the other racist slurs in the game are fine but that one thing in particular is too much? That almost comes off as more offensive.

Got a source on that? cause I know characters have said ♥♥♥ and ♥♥♥♥♥♥ in the same sentence and both are censored.

would be funny if it really is some in universe joke about another word considered bad there and the whole thing was designed to trigger the players by assuming :P

As already mentioned, the censorship on ♥♥♥♥♥♥ is bizarre in the context of characters screaming "♥♥♥♥, fascist pig" then decided that out of all those slurs....they were gonna be super sensitive about the homophobia alone xD?
