Why does making fascist remarks as a fascist hurt you?

I though it was a typo when I read in the effects of the Revancholian Nationhood thought but no, it indeed hurts morale. Why though? I get that most thoughts come with some penalties to balance the bonuses but this just seems to affect roleplay negatively. Shouldn't it be the opposite? Take anything but the nationalistic approach in dialogue and you lose morale.

As of now I can just avoid the negative effects by weaseling out and choosing a dialogue option which misrepresents Harry's actual beliefs. Also, what has fascism got to do with drinking? The bonus you get is quite good but seems quite unrelated to the context of it.

Martinaisse doesn't seem to be that 'polite' to me and NPCs don't really seem to care. They all have such different opinions: communism, ultraliberalism, even fascism like Rene, for example, that I don't think the zone itself has a particular unified ideology.

The why drunkeness gives you those bonuses I'm inclined to believe more. I can imagine the type of man that blames the faults of the world on "the leftist Academia' or Wömen, 'Men of Wo'.

I'll probably drop the thought though. I want to roleplay a fascist, sexist, drunken, racist pig. That is proud of is horrible beliefs.

That's where the game crosses over into the "real world" of politics, it's not about how things are viewed in Martinaise. All of the political positions are caricatures of how they are perceived irl, and expressing fascist opinions in most social contexts will carry extremely negative consequences.

You can still express your beliefs, just have enough heals to counteract the morale loss.

This game has me confused, I thought fascism was a form of how a government deals with the people and not simply an ideaology? I know that people can be in support of their governments but I'm not sure how a person can be a fascist if they aren't directly part of or in support of a government that goes to extremes to control freedom of speech and action. So on topic, I'm not sure how a person can be fascist at all in the sense of the game. I get how they can be nationalistic, that at least makes sense to me.

With that said, why would you WANT to roleplay such a type of person?

I think René is more a royalist than a fascist. In any case he lives so far in the past that no one takes him seriously. The Union gave him a job as a night guard pretty much as a joke. The only character labelled as fascist is Gary the cryptofascist (I didnt know that was an actual word until I played this game). Without going too much into spoilers, the Union are not as complacent with him when he talks politics.

People who want a strong, militaristic state, don't believe in democracy and prefer one leader, and in addition racists who want a super-state just for their own ethnicity.

General tip for DE: you shouldn't min-max. Failure is a part of the game and many interactions are more interesting for role playing if you fail a check then it's succes. So if you take RN in your though cabinet, just accept that you need to buy more magnesium as a downside (it's still a very powerful ability even if you take all nationalist choices).

As for why: fascism is a philosophy of self-pity and humilition disguised as pride. Race theories generally are used to explain how they, the fascists, are the REAl victims. They are succeptible to conspiracy theories because it gives explanations for their victimhood. Being a nationalist in Revachol must be extra difficult because of the occupation. So nationalist thoughts don't bring pride, but constant humiliation, hence the constant morale loss.
