HARDCORE mode is not really hardcore.
First, let me just say, I enjoyed the game, no regrets, worth every cent, you know how it goes. Wish there were more, and honestly wish I could look at art of thoughts in full screen after you're done internalizing them. Not the point.

I''ve just finished it, and the achievement says: only 0.4% have the achievement - True Detective. Given for finishing game in HARDCORE mode.

Now, to the point. HARDCORE mode is, truth be told, not hardcore.
See, in many other games, hardcore mode means "one save file, no savescumming, autosave on exit, all sales are final.". As in, all your decisions, all your choices matter, every your move matters. Everything matters. There's no way to come travel back in past and fix things. Try again. Roll the dice once more.

See where I'm going? In hardcore, game gives you extra experience for tasks, but makes checks more difficult.
I say, what's the point of making them more difficult if Quicksave - Quickload exist? You can just re-roll your checks. If anything, HARDCORE mode makes it easier - by giving extra XP.

I say, HARDCORE should be HARDEST CORE: no second chances, no saves. No manual saves, autosaves only, autosave on exit.

This will really make choices matter, if you dare to play in hardcore mode.

Okay ... or you could just choose not to save-scum and it has the same effect.

When playing the game on Hardcore, I just assume I'm going to fail at every check and so get delighted when I succeed. I do succeed more often than I expect.

I've played this game for 45ish hours and the only 'save scum' I ever did was the one you have to succeed at to progress the game, near the end.

If you mean that you want your character to delete if he dies - then delete your save.

Self-imposed challenges.

Yeah, what's wrong with self-imposed challenges? Gamers have been imposing them on themselves since games were a thing. When I was a kid we even had a 'how far can you play Mario with your eyes closed' challenges because it's a game and part of playing a game is adding your own rules.
I haven't save scummed once my entire play through. This is a true role playing game. If you do that, you're just cheating yourself. Why do you need some mechanic to not cheat? Just don't do it.
