Is it really that good?

So this game just won best RPG, and i just want to know... How? I never heard of this game. I was expecting KH3 to win, so can anyone tell me why?

Best writing in any video game by a wide margin, great art style, innovative roleplaying system, memorable characters, detailed world. Despite the alt-right and combat-freak trolling, it is an instant classic that will change the shape of CRPGs.

So, you know how Planescape Torment raised the bar in terms of writing, narrative, and dialogue that has never actually been reached or surpassed in the last two decades? Yeah well this game actually exceeded it in most people's opinion.
I do agree though that it falls more into the Adventure/Point'n'click narrative than straight up RPG maybe; although the term RPG has gotten so muddled and blurry these days that it's hard to pin down anymore.
It's my 2019 GOTY pick too.

its really good if you like good writing and dialogue, little to no combat though to be clear. I'm on my second playthrough, lots of replayability

Unlike most people, I didn't find the writing THAT good. That said, the themes and moods this game explores feel very engaging and unique. Getting rid of dedicated combat mechanics was probably the best thing the devs did for this project. I feel like, for the longest time, CRPG creators had the wrong mindset when translating the rules of storytelling to videogames. They rightly saw that conflict is what propels the narrative and generates engagement, but they forgot to contemplate the fact that not all conflict is external, and that not all external conflict is combat. Focusing the core gameplay loop on monologue and dialogue decisions allowed the devs of Disco Elysium to explore these other forms of conflict in a way that no other modern videogames (and, in fact, not many other forms of media either) ever tried to.

Everyone should at least give this one a try. It's certainly not for everyone, but you'd be surprised at how many people have changed their view on narrative-heavy videogames after playing this.

KH3 is far from being good, and im a kh fanboy. The game looks better than ever but it feels shallow, and they barely change any rpg mechanic. It was a controversial release for sure.

Elysium is just a true rpg, and a good one at that, well deserve the exposure.

Also "fresh indie", whatever that actually means. I suppose the titles in the regular indie category aren't "fresh"

Imho it is really that good and it fully deserves this because it brings a fresh (old) wind into the genre. I wouldn't say it's the best RPG ever (that's usually a matter of personal taste), but it's definitely the one that's closest to classic pen & paper role playing and it's really very well written. The only game i know that could be compared is Planescape Torment which imho also is one of the best RPGs of all times.

Of course there are many other modern RPGs as well that are quite good, but they usually don't really focus on the classic role playing aspects. Mostly it's about hunting monsters, leveling up and doing linear quests. Some of those game do all this really well, but more in a action adventure way.
