If you've talked to Kim about it, and looked at his car, then bring him in with you to pay rent and admit you don't have the money, he'll help you out.

Kim will help you on day one.
Make sure to have 20 real on day 2 as it's a well known softlock and bug that the developers seem unwilling to fix.
Honestly you should be able to sleep on a bench whenever you want, but that requires you to research a thought, which is bad game design, instead bench sleeping should impact skills on the next day, for the first few hours at least, or cause you to oversleep and miss a couple of hours.

Once you and Kim sort things out and you get to day 3 make sure you talk to everyone in the fishing village before everyone goes to bed. talk to the woman washing clothes and she will give you a free place to sleep

I had to start a new game. It was like after 11pm and I barely had 20 real. Apparently there are ways to get that price down though. But you are certainly not the only one who has run into this.

you can take the bribe from Joyce. If you ask for 120 real it wont count as a "bribe" but as a donation. Put up with the rent until day 3 and you can find free sleeping beds on the other side of the canal.

The best advice I'd give to new players is this: talk to Garte and agree to pay the full 130 real for the damages and booze. Then, go to Joyce and ask for 130, and say you are doing it for an "honorable" reason. Then, go off to buy literally everything you can buy with money (all the books and tabletop games, Cuno's FALN pants, the FALN sneakers from Siileng, all health and morale consumables in Frittte). Then, at the end of the day, when you are pretty much equipped from head to toe with all great gear, talk to Garte and say you were unsuccessful in making that money. Kim will take you aside and pull out the spinners in his Kineema (be sure to say sorry to Kim, he will like you more for it). He will offer those spinners to you to pawn for 200 real, 70 of which he will keep for himself and the 130 to Garte.

Using this approach, the player can exploit Joyce's money to pretty much equip yourself for the rest of the game, without pigeonholing you into not getting something out of an opportunity cost. The only goal from that point is to pay the 20 real for Day 2 (easy enough, considering Evrart will give you 25 real for free - just don't thank him because he sucks).

I just wish there was an option for people who didnt get the money. I got to a point where I was locked out, it was late at night and I didnt have the money but I never got a dialogue option from Garte that would trigger Kim to help out. For how much freedom you have that felt extremely narrow and rigid.

How late? Kim tells you you should think about turning in around 2300 or so, after most NPCs have gone home. I don't think he'll offer to pay before then.

I think it was 2100 or 2200. Guess I didn't wait long enough.
