Up until now, if a PC game couldn’t be played with a controller, then being an ex-console plastic, I wasn’t interested. I gave up on Fallout 1 & 2 because the keyboard/mouse just wasn’t my thing.
But I spent most of today playing this game and totally lost track of time. I cannot recommend this enough to anyone interested in story-driven, well-scripted and clever dialogue.
If you are looking for a decent regular rpg with good story, probably not.
The sheer number of ways you can decide the hows and whys of your character's blunders is what sets it apart from most other RPGs. Plot progression usually takes the form of failing upward, depending on your attribute and skill scores. I got through my first several in-game days by accepting bribes as often as possible and being frequently intoxicated, one of which is a choice in several questlines and the other relates to the skill I put my first skill points into, but I won't spoil which is which.
The writing almost lives up to the hype, which is impressive. It absolutely can be as funny, clever, and dark as its reputation suggests. Unfortunately, it's too flowery and pretentious for its own good; you're just as likely as not to see 'Stygian pool of charcoal-ebony...' where 'oil slick' would suffice. It's not difficult to understand, but there've been times I've sincerely regretted asking a character a question.
...Now that I've typed all this out, though, I'm going to save myself some time by copypasting it as my Steam review. Thanks for the writing prompt.
It's like a really good Salmon dish, won't really matter how good that Salmon is if you hate fish.
The real question is:
How much is the fish?
Sorry XD
For OP, this game can be a very long grocery check list or the RPG of the (past) year, it demands a lot to the player in terms of imagination and word processing, but if the light glows green you'll be in for a truly special run.
