Yeah, I'm pretty sure you need the pheromones to complete that story. I liked the phasmid encounter but it felt very shoehorned in at the end.
If you invest in Inland Empire, it will feel less shoehorned in. You will be able to connect the phasmid to the story more cohesively. The writing for that particular thread that binds the two endgame encounters inextricably to one another is absolutely phenomenal.
Without inland empire, you get both experiences, but are unable to draw any connections between them. With the extra intuition, you'll be able to understand what the phasmid was *doing.* Do an IE/shivers/empathy playthrough. it's amazing.
