Disco Elysium

Disco Elysium

Kim Kitsuragi is a fantastically written character
It would have been easy to make Kim just a killjoy always telling you off for doing strange things, or just being dull and flat, but he's got just enough personality and wit to be engaging. He's got his own things which interest him and his own hidden history. You can open up to Kim and get him to open up to you.

Because he's with you just about every step of the way, you really do get attached to Kim. That could have gone wrong is if you were the only one to contribute thoughts. But Kim has his own ideas, and there's enough back-and-forth in the case to make Kim feel like a true contributing partner, not just a tag-along. The game gives you hints when he wants to step in and you can let him take the lead, and you can get him to have your back.

Really, the only possible flaw with how he's written is that he's perhaps TOO accepting of such a ♥♥♥♥-up that you are, and your total amnesia. That's a little hard-to-swallow for someone as high-ranked as Lieutenant, but it's the kind of flaw which is perfectly fine.

I know the premise of this game doesn't make sense story-wise for there to be a sequel, continuing the adventures of you and Kim, but I would certainly not mind seeing one.

He's the straight man in case you're insistent on going gonzo, like taking ALL THE DRUGS and trying to convince people that the world is ending (which, judging from the lore involve the Pale, may actually be correct).

Might be funny if, by the ending, you could convince him that insanity was actually the way to go, though.
Kim's engagement with the jacket conversation and his subdued sense of humor really sold me on his character. He's a man who takes his job very seriously and thinks it's extremely important, but he's still a human beneath it all who can have a grudging affection for the strange man he's been stuck to.

Well, there is a dialogue in which you want to bust a random door and your empathy says that he thinks although it makes no sense it worked before.
The writing around Kim is my overall favorite thing in this game. I spent my first playthrough being besties with him, and now think doing another being a bastard and antagonizing him is going to be impossible for me.

I think he may be too sympathetic to your character's mental state. I'm trying to be a bad man on my second playthrough but I keep fearing that Kim will be disappointed in me.

that was a referrence to Garte, when he says he was bad ass you can say to him "when you say it like that it sounds like there is something wrong with your ass" on which he simply replies "f_uck you"
