You may get the occasional "combat" dialogue option, then it's a dice roll check with difficulty odds weighed by your physical attribute and skills - but there may be necessary actions open to your decision (the total success of the action depends on which of multiple available options you decide to follow, example: you punch a guy but that's not the end of the combat, what happens next decide if you'll succeed or fail, consequences for failing physical challenges are often severe but you may recover if you keep medicine stocked in your inventory).

It's not that there's no combat, but I'm told that there isn't a lot of it. What combat exists is handled through the dialogue system just like everything else. You pick your option, hopefully one which best fits your build, the dice are rolled and that action plays out. Then, if you aren't dead, pick another dialogue option, and so on.

I think this is a bit reductive. I'll concede that there is a lot of reading, but that's a selling point when the writing is as high of quality as it is in this game.

Traditional point and click games don't incorporate as many tabletop RPG elements as Disco Elysium does which is what makes this game so unique. Most point and click games drive home a narrative that is mostly linear where you end up with few different endings based on your choices throughout the game. This is much more of a role playing game compared to even the highly rated point and click games like Dreamfall or Syberia.

There are battles in this game, battles against uncomfortable chairs and my characters ass. Fortunately my guys ass is made of iron

Well, I tried punch a kid and hit the ground, so there is certainly some strategy involved.

Still have to better understand the dice system. Love it, feels like back in the day when I failed every dice throw even though the odds were like 9:1 in my favour ;D

2d6 + current skill + modifiers, where 'modifiers' can reflect all sorts things like whether you've done related tasks or not. Need to at least match the rating in order to succeed.

Snake eyes is a guaranteed failure and boxcars is a guaranteed success, so there's always at least 1/36 chance to fail even the easiest test and at least 1/36 chance to pass even an otherwise impossible check.

Just don't tempt yourself to save scum (loading a previous save if you failed a skill check) too often. In traditional tabletop games there is no save system, you just have to deal with the consequences of a bad throw. It's not like the game master tells you game over if you throw snake eyes. If you have enough health and morale, just roll with it if you fail. The game is designed to emulate a tabletop experience if you fail skill checks.

If you have questions about the mechanics, ask!

There is no tactical combat but scenes/dialogues may have combat options which are resolved with dice rolls based on your skills.
