My Room is locked, can't get in.
I think it happened after I picked up the shoe on the balcony. Any suggestions?

so i found the container in the harbour and never had a chance for a rhetoric check... is it something that will come up later?

edit: Ok, nevermind. I've got the check but it's a tough one!

To anyone having trouble paying Garte for the hotel room

First, there is no other place to sleep in Martinaise Proper than the Whirling. You can not sleep on the bench or in Cuno’s shack. You might find a place later, on the coast, but not on day 1 or 2. For now, paying for a night in the Whirling is the only way.
Here are some ways to earn money.
1. Go to Roy in the Pawn Shop and sell him some of your quest items.
2. Keep exploring and looking into containers. They often include money.
3. Joyce (on the pier) can give you money. You need to pass a Volition white check for this.
4. There is a locked container in the harbour that needs a Rhetoric check. I won’t spoil it further but there’s a chance to get money involved.
5. If it’s before 23.00, you can equip the yellow tare bag, collect tare and sell it in Fritte.
6. If it’s before 22.00, you can also pass a check with Siileng and ask for money.
7. If it’s 02.00 and everyone has gone to sleep, the streets are empty and you can’t do any -- or enough, at least, to pay Garte -- then congratulations: you are the hobocop now :slightly_smiling_face:
. The only way to get out of this jam is to load a save from earlier. At minimum before 02.00 -- when you can still sell Roy some of your stuff. And if you’re really straped for cash -- before 23.00 when Fritte is still open.
In general, around 19.00 – 22.00 is a good time to start worrying about making rent.
I am sorry, but are you seriously saying this isn't a bug? Because I loved the game - until now. It is 2:00, I have played past 23:00 for real-world hours and only use quicksave - so basically, there is no way back to earlier for me. And when was I ever warned, that I may be venturing down a dead-end alley anyway? Are you saying the design of the game is for me to start all over and repeat all those things I did so far?

Agree with the others, this is something you need to address.
It should at the very least come with its own gameover screen but possibly more. Everything in the game up to this point hints at you not really needing to care about this issue (you can refer to yourself as a freaking hobocop who will sleep in the dumpster for starters) and then suddenly going "No, your ♥♥♥♥♥♥ bed in a room with the broken window is the only place you can sleep" makes no sense. Not to mention it can easily ruin several hours of play.
Seriously, please fix this. I've sold all my stuff, I've turned in all my tare, and I've failed the checks to get money from people. I can't do anything about it. Super frustrating.
Quicksave/quickload are your friends.

Short of that, for a solution I guess maybe they could just prevent all spending on Day 2 until you've paid your debt, maybe keep track of it separately, automatically deduct it from your regular money? Not sure how you'd implement it. But I *would* love it if you could just sleep on the street, in exchange for some long-lasting penalties.

Wow... you have failed every single check? Including asking Garte for discounts? Where did you put your points?
I've never even been offered a discount.

LOL.
"Unprecedented freedom of choice" trailer says.

I don't think it's a bad thing not to give the player an option for the night. That said, you guys should probably have Kim (or someone else) remind the detective that sleeping on the streets is not an option, and that he should REALLY drop everything and start looking for cash at about 5 or 6pm.

I was lucky I managed to get Joyce to bribe/donate at about 11pm

This seems like a glaring flaw. Should let us attempt to sleep on the streets, but with some checks needed and maybe morale loss regardless?
You regain all your health/morale when sleeping so that wouldn't work unless the damage came when you wake up.
I am so upset about this, that I stopped playing the game altogether. I am not going to ask for refunds, but this bug just ruined it all for me. Btw why can't you just find a stupid plastic bag to collect the bottles to be able to pay for your room in the unreal world, where time has stopped at 2PM?
I'm been playing for just over 8hrs, so far. The time is 18:00 and after this thread... I'm nervous.

I must really be missing out on a lot. I've turned in a whopping 3.00 in bottles and Shiveles or whatever, donated 10.00 to the national customer fund.

The Pawn shop only bought a cloth rag and something else, that IDK WTF it was, TBH. So, we have almost 14.00 A long way away from 130.

We have that big Sandwich head dude, that we can't get past and a locked door at the top of the stairs by the gate.

EDIT:
Wait a min... Why do I need to sleep, anyway? I just need to find enough dialogue to advance time, to get Kim to go to bed, then wait on the bench.
... right?

I've never had a problem collecting the money to pay the rent my first playthrough. I never even found the pawn shop. I did ask for the discount however.

Not sure when I got it but there is an ultraliberal thought that gives you a dollar for every ultraliberal option you select. I was so rich by the end of the game. But...I'm just a filthy uncommunist sellout.

The first day I found all the money I needed with the discount. Then I just sellout the rest of the game and had money.

Yeah there's a few thought cabinets that do similar things, I was getting +10xp and 2R$ for every encyclopedia check in dialogues, another that gave 10cents for every single examination orb I clicked on in the world, etc.
By the end I had 400 and something Reals; sadly there's next to nothing to actually purchase though outside of the books/boardgames/clothes that I already got. I do wonder if it's possible to reach the 700 or so needed for the street lamp in the Pawn shop, and what even happens if you buy it..
