Where can i sleep?
Couldn't pay back the clerk so he cut my access to the room.
Is there somewhere i can actually sleep?

First, there is no other place to sleep in Martinaise Proper than the Whirling. You can not sleep on the bench or in Cuno’s shack. You might find a place later, on the coast, but not on day 1 or 2. For now, paying for a night in the Whirling is the only way.
Here are some ways to earn money.
1. Go to Roy in the Pawn Shop and sell him some of your quest items.
2. Keep exploring and looking into containers. They often include money.
3. Joyce (on the pier) can give you money. You need to pass a Volition white check for this.
4. There is a locked container in the harbour that needs a Rhetoric check. I won’t spoil it further but there’s a chance to get money involved.
5. If it’s before 23.00, you can equip the yellow tare bag, collect tare and sell it in Fritte.
6. If it’s before 22.00, you can also pass a check with Siileng and ask for money.
7. If it’s 02.00 and everyone has gone to sleep, the streets are empty and you can’t do any -- or enough, at least, to pay Garte -- then congratulations: you are the hobocop now
The only way to get out of this jam is to load a save from earlier. At minimum before 02.00 -- when you can still sell Roy some of your stuff. And if you’re really straped for cash -- before 23.00 when Fritte is still open.
In general, around 19.00 – 22.00 is a good time to start worrying about making rent.

Knowing that you owe over 100 real, not accepting money without an alternative is a form of stupidity. And the game throws you a bone by having Kim literally stick what you need to pay off your debt into your hands. You are told that you must pay by a certain time. If you can't follow simple instructions, then it's your fault.

If you speak to Joyce on the boat, she will pay your debt for you as well. Accepting money from Evart or Joyce has no story or character consequences. You need to hustle and grind.

"Being able to play however you want" is an absolute myth, reinforced by overly easy games that reward haphazard and inattentive play.

Then you should get a game over screen, not a game stuck in an unwinnable state.

Perhaps they should have. Just wish instead of rushing to blame the game, the player would realise they messed up very explicit instructions with lots of handholds preventing them from reaching an unwinnable position. It boggles the mind.

No, it's called having a morale. A cop should never accept money from criminals.

You are told that you must pay by a certain time.
That's wrong, the game says that if you don't pay, you will have to sleep "somewhere else". NEVER the game says it will be game over because, for some weird reason, your character is unable to sleep outside.

Silly to LARP like that, the computer doesn't care what you do. The police force is made up of poorly paid volunteers who self-fund through fines to begin with.

Try sleeping on Cuno's bed. Or edit your save game, who knows, in some of your cases it might be a bug. But if you aren't getting the money from people or from Kim you are doing something very wrong.

It's *literally* a role-playing game.

Taking the donation from the White Pines Negotiator isn't great, but at least what she wants is legitimate police business, and she doesn't insist you share the information you discover with her.

Claire is just a plain sleazy, power-tripping a-hole, and it would feel wrong to give him the satisfaction of taking his offensively small bribe.

Try sleeping on Cuno's bed.

The developer confirmed that it's Whirling-in-Rags or reload. No alternative sleeping locations exist before Day 3.

This is a role playing game. Devs shouldn't force you to be corrupt or else you lose the game.
Especially in a game that say it has ton of choices.
Sisyphus Oct 21, 2019 @ 7:37pm
But you aren't corrupt, unless you choose to share information between one or both of them. You're doing jobs to get information, they give you money with no further strings attached. It's not like anything changes, you're imagining stuff there that has no link to the mechanics or narrative.

Hes still a slimeball. Do you accept money from slimeball?
Why should i be forced to do it otherwise i get a unwinnable state?

He offers that cheque to you to clear things up with Garte. It's still 25 if you see him on Day 1, when you have 130 Real in debt.

Not only is that a bribe, but such a comically small bribe that I found it offensive. It won't help on Day 1, and after that you should be able to cover the rest on your own.

Umm....Kim offers you stuff that you can sell and get 130 Real from.
How did you not get that?

Not me, I got it from the boat woman. And for the record, I didn't get stuck without rent money at all. The potentially unwinnable state happens on Day 2.

I made almost 20 Real just by selling ♥♥♥♥ I found on the streets on Day 2 :/

Still, if someone somehow isn't able to make that much money, maybe they can go up to the room in the Whirling to see if they can still trigger Kim to go sleep?
I didn't get myself into that position so I can't say for sure if that happens or not but it's worth a try.

And as someone has already mentioned, there is also Cuno's shack.

When you know you don't have money to stay for the night at the hotel, looking for a place to sleep or a way to make enough money should be one of the top priorities through the day. The game definitely has options.

Hmmm....didn't read that post earlier coz it was spoiler tagged. That does look like an oversight by the devs and definitely needs to be fixed.

How did you get that far into the game without making enough money or finding stuff to sell though?
Did you not accept money from Joyce either?

Still, quite a sucky position you've found yourself in. Maybe you should just edit the .ini file like someone's mentioned and give yourself the required money.

Well, part of the issue is perhaps not finding out you need to pay 120 réal until it's almost too late. In my case, it so happened I didn't speak to Garte until about 00:30. I had to search to find out how to raise the money (Kim wasn't offering to pay), and that's what brought me to this thread. Luckily, I was able to successfully beg the Wild Pines lady for money but others may not be so lucky. And that's where it comes down to poor design.

Other than that, what a fabulous game it is so far.
