Safer spaces without many stacks does protect you in two cases.
1. If you haven't received damage and a voidtouched enemy hits you, then safer spaces eats the damage and you don't get collapsed.
2. If the voidtouched enemy hits you while safer spaces is on cooldown then you take damage and get collapsed, but if there are less than three seconds left of safer spaces then safer spaces will eat the collapse damage.
With 9 or more stacks of safer spaces I think it's likely that when you get collapsed you'll have it on by the time collapse triggers, but to make sure of that you need at least 16 stacks. So, with many stacks, safer spaces protects you from collapse very efficiently.
TL:DR I prey to RNJesus for safer spaces or risk 1 shot death lmao.
Overall, as it is right now you usually don't expect to protect yourself from collapse but to mitigate its effects so that you don't die.
Early game one or two medkits do the trick: Voidtouched enemies have less base damage than normal enemies so when they hit you you want to go back to at least 90% health. For example, a level 1 voidtouched stone titan deals 28 damage with its punch, collapses you, and 3 seconds later collapse explodes for a total of 112 damage. Let's suppose you're a level 1 huntress and have 90 health. The first attack will hit you and leave you with 62 health, and if you don't do anything you're dead. But if you have a single medkit, 2 seconds after the punch, before collapse triggers, you heal for 24 health, going back to 86 health. Then collapse explodes, one shot protection triggers and you go to 5 health. Then, two seconds later you heal 24 and go to 29 health. That's not counting base regeneration, but it's so that you get the idea.
Late game worst case scenario you can get a similar result with 12-16 medkits, basically because there are enemies that hit you and trigger osp without even requiring collapse, so if you get collapsed you have to heal back to 90% health before it explodes. 16 medkits do the trick.
That said, tougher times and safer spaces can protect you from collapse, so they're always good items to have and stack.
