Otherwise experimentation is the best teacher really.
Stacking crit is a *little* redundant on him, but not necessarily always bad to do. Backstabs via the face can be handy.
He's in a similar boat as Arty where his damage doesn't really get a ton out of attack speed. There's some utility for it, but you don't want attack speed cranked as high as possible.
Otherwise, he's in the same boat as other survivors for everything else. Some healing items of your choice being medkits, shrooms, slugs, and then chase the good on-kill and proc items.
and backup mags are amazing for letting you stack critical bleeds since they can just stealth behind enemies (you also get ALL your stacks back from light's out)
crowbar lets you 1shot a bunch of lesser enemies with your R
Also enables you to sort of fly with Right Click due to the short cooldown ^^
Apart from that, obligatory items according to me are stacking crowbars, focus thingys (deal more damage to close enemies) and the scythe that heals on crit.
