To get to stage 20 Commando

There is an achievement for commando to get to stage 20 without picking up any lunar items. Around stages 15-19 the fps is terrible and everything is basically a one shot. My closest attempt was stage 19. I read online that you can use newt altars and taking the blue portal to count as a stage cleared. This did not work for me... I did not pick up any lunar items either. Do I have to kill every single enemy on a level for it to count as cleared? Am I missing something?

P.S I was playing solo on the easiest difficulty.

you answered your question yourself, you only got to stage 19

Just play to stage 20, you got to 19 so try again. Command artifact can make things easy. Don't forget to go fast, max out at roughly 5 minutes per stage or 20-25 minutes per loop.

I guess its just that I was confused because I read on a previous thread that you could use newt altars.

That was back when bonus stages like the Bazaar Between Time counted as additional stages. It was later updated to where only the main cycle of levels counted as stages. Stuff like the Void Fields and the aforementioned Bazaar are not part of that.
