Huntress takes skill
Commando: Run of the mill character, use your dodge to get out of danger and your M2 attack to wittle down enemies close to death.

MUL-T : Strategically use your cluster grenades to stun the more tanky enemies like the stone titans while providing covering fire with your rebar launcher against any wisps in the area. Your grenades are also really good for clearing out any squishy low-level enemies that happen to coat the floor.

Engineer: Place turrets and mines around the teleport to provide maximum aid against the level's boss while also using your shield to protect your turrets, yourself, and your teammates against the more deadlier attacks, easily the character that requires the player to strategize more than full front assault.

Artificer: Use the two polar opposite forces of nature to your advantage as you clean out the weaker enemies with your flamethrower attack, while saving your other high-damage abilities for tankier opponents. Careful, your lack of a 'dodge' capability can make you an easy picking for some enemies. "The best defense is a good offence" should be a motto you live by to play this character.

Mercenary: Use your close-range attacks to your full advantage while enemies are stunned, your high speed and double-jump capacity to avoid getting hit by projectiles, and your 'eviscerate' attack to make short work of level bosses.

*Cough* Huntress: HOLD DOWN M1 WHILE POINTING YOUR CROSSHAIR AT THE GENERAL DIRECTION OF THE ENEMY, THE ARROWS CONNECT THEMSELVES SO THERE'S NO NEED TO AIM! AND BLINK OUT OF ANY REMOTE SENSE OF DANGER WHEN YOU GET TOO SPOOKED, AND TO QUICKSTEAL ANY JUICY ITEMS AND CHESTS. MAYBE USE M2 IF YOU'RE FEELING GENEROUS. ONLY THE TRULY SKILLED USE THEIR 'R' DURING BOSSFIGHTS.

One of these is not like the others, did you spot it?

Huntress is a beginner friendly character whose focus is mobility and crowd control while her drawback is being a bit squishy. She's been that way since the first game.

I feel like you didn't play the first game. Huntress has always been a super easy to use characters.

I didn't play the first game. Do I have to? It's literally just a 2D version of RoR2 with a few changes (as I read) Don't get me wrong, risk of rain 2 is a really fun game. But every time I see a huntress in the lobby I feel like blowing my ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ brains out.

If I had to be honest; every character, but Mercenary & Artificer are way too easy to play as.

I'm just here waiting for the Enforcer...

maybe a bit /too/ friendly? You literally need to hold down your mouse1 and walk forward. Blink to steal items and to ♥♥♥♥ off when things get spooky. A person with three times the normal amount of chromosomes would be able to play her.
If you'd played her for more than a run or two, you'd know that isn't the case unless you're sitting there on Drizzle (and why would you do that?).

Huntress is currently arguably the most difficult character to survive in Monsoon with. While she doesn't have to aim her clicks, it's incredibly difficult to stay alive with her past the 25+ minute mark on Monsoon with her compared to the other characters. The only other character comparably hard to stay alive with is Artificer, ironically for the very opposite reason: Huntress is all mobility, and Artificer is all damage.

In late runs, I always feel I'm working harder with Huntress than I do with the other ranged characters -- I haven't played much Merc yet, so I can't comment on him -- because she needs to be constantly aerial to survive.

Huntress is that simple character you can get used to the game with, more so than the starting character the Commando. Back in RoR1 huntress was who I got my first win with just because she can kite.

She's definitely a character made for beginners but she doesn't hold up as well as others late game, it's a fair balance. Nobody is really too complicated or difficult to play besides Mercenary, Artificer, and upcoming character Bandit.

the problem with the R from the huntress its not going to proc any items so most of the time M1 und m2 are the best choices
Huntress seems the be far and away the most controversial and polarizing character in the game. Every one either thinks she's brain dead and broken or complete trash. I'm gonna try to explain the power curve on the huntress because I think it's key to understanding why people are so split on her. Also in this post I will assume monsoon difficulty.

The huntress has a strong early game, a poor mid game, and a strong late game.

Early game: The huntress has good damage by herself and very strong mobility which allows her to clear stages fairly quickly (not as quickly as MUL-T though). Additionally at this point in the game she doesn't get one shot yet.

Mid game: The huntress gets one shot now and her damage is pretty average, making her a somewhat below average character. Most other characters won't get one shot just yet but the huntress does making her undesirable in the mid game.

Late game: Huntress has very good damage scaling meaning she will do incredible amounts of damage come late game. Also she has the second best mobility in the game beat out only by mercenary, and mercenary has to be in melee range which is just awful late game. This is also the point in the game where everyone gets one shot if they don't have insane tankiness so the huntresses poor hp begins to matter much less.

Hardest to play character is Artificer. Like, hands down.

I consider the early game to be loop 1, the mid game about stages 5-10 and the late game everything stage 11+.

The thing about Huntress is that she's very very squishy. I know a lot of the game comes down to things that one shot any character, but a LOT more things will kill the huntress easily. Her damage is also really lacking against targets she can't R. Late game she works fine with items, but early on she can be pretty hard to deal with.

I'm starting to think people just see that Huntress has autoaim and, by that virtue, she has to be the lowest skill character. She had autoaim in the first game. You likely never noticed because you only had two directions to attack in. Huntress may have been easier for some due to that, but she also was (and still is) a character of extremes. No one has ever had a nail-biting run of Risk of Rain as Huntress. They either died early in the run, or got some godly items and looped the game until they got bored and basically one-shot providence out of pity.

I don't know how many times I have to say this before people will get it: Huntress is a skirmisher. Stay moving, burn cooldowns, blink away from danger, plink with arrows until cooldowns return, rinse, repeat. Her M1 being auto aim means ♥♥♥♥ when it's also the skill that basically acts as filler for her actual damaging abilities on M2 and R. Not to mention right now she's undertuned, as her range is rather limited and could use a slight buff, as well as, at least in my experience, Hardlight Afterburners seems to become a mandatory item if you want to survive towards later difficulties, which really shouldn't be the case for someone who has an evade on both their Shift and R abilities.

I can't wait for Sniper to release. One, because Sniper was my boy from the first one and I can't wait to see how he handles Risk of Rain 2, and two, because these threads will end incredibly quickly with "Okay, then pick Sniper instead."
