sword dude

saw some guy playing as a sword wielding dude and i want to know how i can unlock him

You can see how to unlock every character in the logbook, just hover over their shadows and it will tell you :)

You have to sacrifice yourself to the Obelisk to unlock him.

are you sure about that?

cause it seems to me thats just how to unlock the log entry, not the actual character himself

Must have been beating 30 stages then for the sword guy I unlocked both at the same time.

If Engineer comes from the Obelisk.

the sword weilding Mercenary comes from obliterating yourself on the oblisk, which you'll see at i think stage 9ish. rather than using the teleporter, there will be a bright portal to take instead right next to it.

you can just do what i did and go into game files to unlock all the characters :) enless you want to earn them legit.

To get the Mercenary (Sword Dude) You'll have to enter a Celestial Portal (It will say that a celestial orb has appeared, then a celestial portal has opened)

Enter it, and walk up to the obelisk and "Obliterate Myself" (it'll end your run but you only have to do this once to get him)
If you ever end up back there, you can walk up to the obelisk, don't obliterate, and walk down to your right to a portal there that'll continue your run
