Not that anyone thinks the schlock is good, but that some people are able to enjoy campy material for what it is.
I'v never been someone who can harshly criticize things, because I always think about the people who made them, and how they tried there best, and I appreciate their effort regardless of the final product. I always know their is an understandable reason things are the way they are. DMC1's voice acting is the way it is, beacuse voice acting for video games was something that was still evolving at the time.
Though, standards of the times aside, things cost money both to make, and then to consume. It was people's jobs to produce it, so even harsh criticism is valid when the quality of the final product is low.
Stuff like the Street Fighter movie is often viewed nostalgically and given a semi-free pass, not because it's good or because most people appreciate the effort, but because camp is funny. It's entertaining not because it did what it tried to do at all well, it's entertaining because the ways in which it fail to do what it was trying to do are funny in their own way, and people enjoy that.
In the case of DMC, I'm almost certain the camp was intentional, because I don't think this was ever legitimately considered cool by anyone beyond the age of 15. But it's okay, because over-the-top camp was the goal. It works because it's cheesy done right.
Kinda like half the dialog in Metal Gear Solid
In the first game, it is
"I should've been the one to fill your dark soul with LIIiiiIIGGHHTTtt!"
But DMC was only ever done in english until very recently.
If you can't handle the overwhelming post-90's feel, don't play.

DMC 3 from the get go know it was cheesy, campy, and just over the top but plays with it in a respectable way. The camp and cheesy builds up Dante character and the action. Because we play as Dante it is the way that he is cheesy and camp.
That camp and cheesy makes Dante cool and relatable so when the game shove us some legitimate heavy story, drama, and character moments it felt impactful to the characters.
Joking aside, I can understand those who have outgrown the smack talk and cheesy humour. Personally, it doesn't bother me, as I'm enjoying the nostalgia trip. Teenage, then adult me loved DMC1 and 3, cheese (maybe not so much the dash of cringe) and all. I played the hell out of the PS2 discs, I'm gonna enjoy doing the same with the HD collection. (Except you, DMC2. You just make things awkward...)
Judging from this thread and your replies, you take yourself way too seriously. I'm guessing that is why you don't like it anymore
