How the hell do you beat him? I use the UFG to close in on him as soon as possible, but he still gets off 2 sniper shots. One on the way in, and one point blank, then bam, I'm dead.

on you gun/sword equipment (the one you start the fight with) use your deflect skill which is the 2 when using mouse and keyboard. thatll pretty much keep him from sniping you the whole fight. then just slash away.

I was so under leveled, and I've not used swords at all, soooo I just gave up. Doing ng+ now and I realized there's an "easy" difficulty, I'd totally have done that if I had known.

It was actually pretty easy after I used the bullet deflect skill that dropdeadDT recommended. You just have to keep Death Gun in front of you while you slash away with your regular attack. When he starts getting out of melee range, just run up to him and start hitting him again. If he gets behind or beside you, then you won't deflect the bullets, and that's when it's a 2 shot death.

It's worth beating him. You unlock a couple of Kirito's sword skills, and can get Death Gun's invisibility, which I think you can purchase in the gadget store.

I tried that and he just pulled out his sword and stabbed my face. Between that and the grenade to stun to headshot.... meh.

I tried that with keep him on close range, uhm, he oneshotted me with the sniper

All you really had to do was use Dual Orbital and Sword Barrier, and stay close to Death Gun. The fight was ridiculously easy. Bonus points if you use Melee Booster Kit.

Death gun seriously needs a checkpoint right before the fight. It's ridiculous to need to skip 7ish cutscenes just to try again.
