The best way to keep your shoulders and arms from being unnecessarily strained is to make sure you're using your whole body (i.e. engage your core, square your shoulders, lead with your hips, all that fun stuff).
If you think that's bad, try spending a few hours trying to full combo a song with a bunch of crouches in it.
I started beating it really hard until it hurt a lot. The best thing is to beat it at a lower level at first and build up.
But in all seriousness though. When I was playing beat saber too much my arms would get sore. I didn't play for a couple of days in between and they felt better. Eventually I could play for a many days in a row without pain. But it does take getting used to it like any form of excercise
