Someone discovered the solution in chat. Simply go to game preference and set the beta to pre-something and voilà. In my mac now all OK!

Today's update should have fixed Portal 2 now!
So I hopefully hope that y'all no longer need to opt into the previous_release beta for Portal 2 to work.

Got the updates (client and game) and turned off previous beta setting and restarted Steam. Still crashes. Only thing I haven't tried is rebooting too but that shouldn't be necessary.

Sorry to hear that, I'm not quite sure myself as to why this update is causing this problem.
I will try to look further into this until either Valve releases yet another Update or I find a solution to this technical issue :p

no, its a parameter used to launch demos (recordings) when the game starts
