Portal 2 won't launch for me?!?!
Hi, when i double click Portal 2 it says its preparing to launch and that closes out, then the little advertisments that come up after you exit a game pop up. Any ideads? I had the same problem with Saints Row the Third on my computer but i fixed it.
Specs:
Processor: AMD FX(tm)-6120 six-core 3.5 GHz
64 bit operating system
10 GB RAM
Graphic Card: AMD Radeon HD 7450

I really need someone help! :(

Try and restart steam. That normally fixes my problems or validate the game. I would try both of those.

I am having the same problem. I have reinstalled twice, verified the game files successfully both times. I have followed all the instructions at https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=6218-USFX-5568 except for the "secondary installers" because I can not find those files in the portal 2 folder.

This may help

1. Close Steam
2. Delete the portal 2 *.nfc files from ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/ (there were 3 for me)
3. Delete all the files and folders from ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/common/portal 2/ except the portal2 folder
4. Open steam and the game should look uninstalled
5. Click install and it should install all the files you deleted, its only about 100mb so it shouldn't take to long

My Portal 2 was doing that as well. It took reverting my video driver back to its original oem driver to fix it. Funnily enough, it was only Portal 2 that was doing that. All other games worked fine.

I dont see how this could be my Issue, I only changed the drivers after portal stopped working. I was using 6 month old drivers before.
I am running a GeForce GTX 460 SE and a AMD FX-4100 quad core CPU.

Radnave: you didn't have a Windows Update, change any drivers, update directX, anything at all before this started happening?
Radnave Jun 28, 2013 @ 9:25pm
the only thing that happened before this was steam's "formatting" change they just did to Portal 2 and Half Life 2. However, Half life 2 runs fine, I'm only having trouble with portal 2.

Radnave, I hadn't updated my video driver since before the last time I had played but something changed with steam or something and reverting my video driver fixed it. Try it or don't, that's up to you, but it sounds like the same exact problem I was having and that's how I fixed mine.

Same for me, after waiting for that to update, I didn't feel like playing anymore so turned it off. Got up today and felt like playing and get a "checking for steam games updates" message that doesn't stop.

Wow, ok it seems that Steam nicely uninstalled Half-Life 2 and Portal 1 for me as well! Then gives me the same message when trying to re-install. I just played Portal on Monday and I know I didn't uninstall it, what the hell is happening?

Ok, here is what I did (in order):
• Deleted all the local content for portal 2 (through the right click menu).
• Reinstalled Portal 2.
• Restored my graphics card drivers (from 320.18 to 310.90).
• Verified the game files successfully.
• Disabled antivirus and firewall.
• Updated DirectX, PhysX and C++ Redistributables.
• Attempted to run portal 2 for the first time since the fresh install.
The preparing to run window appeared, and closed almost immediately. After 5 minutes, a glance at the task manager shows that the portal2.exe is not running.
I restarted my computer, and tried starting portal again, with the same results.
• Reinstalled geforce driver 320.18
• Restarted PC
• Same error occurred on 2nd attempt to run.
I am going to try another full install when I get the chance.

Its probably your version of computer, or the cache files
Elmosservant Jun 29, 2013 @ 7:13pm
Try uninstalling and reinstalling hte game
Radnave Jun 29, 2013 @ 10:04pm
@Alexor81 - I doubt that is the issue, since I was playing it 3 weeks ago, and I've been using this PC for 3 years. I have the same class processor and OS as the OP.

It has to be the Graphics card. A friend made a comment saying that is holding the PC back quality wise. Pretty much saying the video card sucks and all of the other things are too much better to run with it.

that dosent explain it for me tho, I have a GeForce 640 GTX and played portal 2 on it when it was first release on max settings.
