I am running a GeForce GTX 460 SE and a AMD FX-4100 quad core CPU.
Wow, ok it seems that Steam nicely uninstalled Half-Life 2 and Portal 1 for me as well! Then gives me the same message when trying to re-install. I just played Portal on Monday and I know I didn't uninstall it, what the hell is happening?
• Deleted all the local content for portal 2 (through the right click menu).
• Reinstalled Portal 2.
• Restored my graphics card drivers (from 320.18 to 310.90).
• Verified the game files successfully.
• Disabled antivirus and firewall.
• Updated DirectX, PhysX and C++ Redistributables.
• Attempted to run portal 2 for the first time since the fresh install.
The preparing to run window appeared, and closed almost immediately. After 5 minutes, a glance at the task manager shows that the portal2.exe is not running.
I restarted my computer, and tried starting portal again, with the same results.
• Reinstalled geforce driver 320.18
• Restarted PC
• Same error occurred on 2nd attempt to run.
I am going to try another full install when I get the chance.
